An orthopaedic surgeon is a physician who specializes in diagnosis and surgical treatment of injuries and disorders involving the musculoskeletal system, such as hip replacements and arthroscopic knee surgery.
In addition to treating trauma to the musculoskeletal system, these doctors also deal with sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors and congenital disorders.
- Orthopedic Surgery of the Spine
If you have a back injury or unexplained back pain, your doctor might refer you first to a radiologist and then to an orthopedic spinal surgeon. They specialize in the spine and can diagnose and treat spinal diseases such as scoliosis. They can also treat spinal injuries such as a displaced disc or a fracture, as well as disc degeneration and narrowing that occurs due to aging.
However, when your injury or condition affects the spinal canal or spinal cord, it’s typically better to consult with a neurosurgeon. It's worth noting that, while they're both referred to as surgeons, they can also recommend treatments that don't require an operation, such as non-surgical decompression therapy.

I let Dr. Raben do surgery on in Dec on 2000 and 2001! He sent me home from the hospital in 2000, with no turtle shell brace. I walked around with a broken back for a few weeks. He was so scared I was going to sue him, he refused to see me again, unless I could pay off my balance of a few hundred dollars!! HE DIDN'T WANT THE CLOCK TO START OVER!! He made thousands off Walmart's insurance!! But, he knew he screwed up, and I might sue. I SHOULD HAVE!! I'm so screwed up now, I can't find a specialist that will take my case!! I'm 50 years old, and just sitting here waiting to die.....The only good thing about him was his nurse, Betsie Barnes, I think!
When I first saw him in Wooster my back was to the point that I thought surgery was the only answer. Dr. Raben suggested trying a series of injections first. They were a life saver. First two then another set of two lower and then six facets in the lower back. That was the ticket. He was a perfect gentleman that never made me feel rushed or not heard. I can not say enough good things about him. When he left I felt bad. But he got me started on a plan for pain control. I will always be thankful for that.
I had back surgery in 2011. I am in constant pain. My experience with Dr. Raben was the worst I've EVER had with a doctor. Of course, if you don't mind being preached to incessantly, made to wait for 90 minutes for him to stroll in for your appointment and dealing with an arrogant little man, by all means make an appointment with him!
