Dr. Akbarian diagnosed sleep apnea- changed my life so much for the better!

I saw this doctor several years ago, and to this day I still remember how he treated me. I am a wife and Mom of two boys, high school and college. I have often thought about returning to this man to tell him to snap out of it, and that I did not appreciate how he handled my care. This is perfect. Do not see this doctor. He was disrespectful, and dismissed what I was trying to tell him. I was there because my primary care told me to see him. He should have treated me with honor, not only because I was his patient, but I am a woman, and older than him. Shame on his parents, shame on him. Young man, if you are married, take care of your wife. Please take care of your children. You need to be a role model. What goes around comes around. Now, go do the right thing.

I really liked him. Probably is he is no longer practicing. He up an left and the staff at the office (he shared the office with other Doctors who are still there) Are just bone dead stupid. I have had my primary care try more than once to get my records from that office so they would have them and so they can get forwarded to my new neurologist. All they ever get is a letter with my diagnosis and nothing else.

My mistake in my life going to Akbarian.

I came to Dr. Akbarian for minor neurological symptoms - they were not debilitating, but I wanted to have them looked into. I realized that as we progressed through the neurological exam, he was not listening to my answers, as he repeated several questions unnecessarily. He then said that I would need an MRI - when I asked him why, he said it was a matter of "dotting the i's and crossing the t's". I have a PhD from Harvard in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and he was treating me like a moron! Furthermore, when I told him my fear in the MRI was having an IV injection of a heavy metal chelate (gadolinium), instead of responding empathetically, he became angry with me and argued that gadolinium is not a heavy metal. I found this completely unprofessional. I was very stressed for the remainder of the appointment, actually on the verge of tears, and couldn't relax for the exam. When he noticed this, he became frustrated with me. Instead of helping me to relax, he insisted that I seek… professional help for learning how to relax. Lastly, the staff at the office were horrendous. They did not return my phone calls, and they were rude when I interacted with them. They explained things to me like I was a 4-year-old. I've since gone to another neurologist at MGH who has been extremely kind and knowledgeable, and can adjust his demeanor to suit his patient, which made me feel like I was listened to and my concerns were valid. I would not recommend Dr. Akbarian. He is hands down the worst doctor I have ever encountered.
