Dr. Dale Shelley Jacknow, MD

Dr. Jacknow has worked with both our boys for over 10 years. She helped us navigate challenging issues and I am happy to report that at the ages of 16 and 18, our boys are successful, happy and thriving. I credit much of this to our partnership with Dr. Jacknow. Her evaluations, diagnosis, medications prescribed and referrals helped us navigate our unique challenges. The hardest part of having kids with special needs is getting the right team of support in place. Dr. Jacknow was our cornerstone. I cannot say enough positive things about her.

Dr. Jacknow has been taking care of our 8 year old kid with ASD for the last two years. She has been terrific in all aspects. Thorough, compassionate, flexible with schedules, and most importantly her treatment helped our kid make real solid progress. We also found her to be a great source of support for ourselves - as she is able to listen to our concerns and provide us with renewed hope. Super highly recommended.

We are so grateful to Dale Jacknow for all she has done for our son and our family. Our son, who has Fragile X Syndrome and Autism, has seen Dr. Jacknow for about 16 years. She has taken extraordinary care of us through many very tough behavioral times. She is incredibly smart, compassionate, wise and thorough. She has an amazing knowledge of medications which alone, makes her worth her weight in gold. If you've been out there with other psychiatrists or behaviorists, you can understand what I mean. Dr. Jacknow is incredibly competent and a truly wonderful human being.

Dr Jacknow followed our child for 13 of his 16 years, and we have just concluded this journey, so this seemed a fitting time to write this review. If you have concerns about your child's development, you understand the fear and sadness that may come with taking the steps to get an assessment and possible diagnosis. This is not what any parent expects to be doing with a toddler or young child, and it is not for the faint of heart. But your child needs you to act, so you do. Once you start to look for the right person to see your child, you are thinking about someone with the expertise to get it right--that's mostly what you think about: please let me find someone who will tell us what's going on and who knows what she/he is talking about. There are definitely experts out there. But what you may not realize, as you start the process, is that you need someone who not only is an expert in the field of child development (and ideally has a medical background) but also has two other crucial pieces you will need: (1) The ability to put her/his finger on the pulse of YOUR child. (2) The resources to put a plan into action; a person who knows the BEST people in their fields. Dr. Jacknow, in addition to being a developmental pediatrician, with the expertise and credentials, has those two crucial pieces that you must find in order to not only make, but to sustain a plan for your particular child as she/he grows and changes. She has an uncanny ability to know the child she is working with. Her years of experience and innate understanding of children make her an expert in YOUR child. It's amazing and comforting at the same time. And that understanding is what will help her develop the right plan for your child and guide her in recommending individuals to work with her/him. And Dr. Jacknow knows the best therapists. It's critical to work with people who can really impact your child, and she has those resources for you so that you can focus on implementing a plan rather than finding the people you need. Make no mistake, there may be a lot of work ahead of you and your child. But having a partner like Dr. Jacknow is the best way to get through this journey knowing you have done everything possible for your child and your family.

I am a therapist working in the same community as Dr. Jacknow. She is a highly respected professional because of her excellent work, and I have referred many families to her. When my own daughter began showing signs of developmental problems, I called Dr. Jacknow right away. Her work is thorough and thoughtful and she is a smart, kind and compassionate individual. We have been working with the specialists she referred us to and are already seeing changes in our child. Dr. Jacknow is amazing-very smart and very supportive. She has evaluated both of our children. They each have very different issues. Our son has autism while our daughter has a learning disability. Dr. Jacknow was really thorough and thoughtful in her approach. Both my kids really liked her, even my son who has trouble warming up to people. Before the evaluations I really had no idea what to do to help them because there is so much information out there and it is really hard to know what the right thing is. The most helpful part for us was that Dr. Jacknow gave us really clear advice and also told us what to focus on and what was not important. She also helped us sort out what is typical kid stuff and what is actually related to their problems. Because of her, both of my kids have really made progress. Our initial wait was long, but it was totally worth waiting to get in to see her.

Dr. Jacknow is highly knowledgeable professional who helped us tease out our child's learning needs. She doesn't just jump to a diagnosis or a conclusion, she takes time to analyze the presenting symptoms and always leads discussions emphasizing the child's potential. I consider myself pretty well-educated but still somehow missed some signals in our child's behavior which, when she pointed them out, truly resonated with us and made it easier to provide the right kind of support for our child in the classroom and at home. It would be a bit more convenient if she enabled online communications with her office even just for scheduling discussion purposes, but otherwise we are very happy customers.

Dr. Jacknow diagnosed our son over thirteen years ago and she has overseen his treatment ever since. Over the years, we have been continually impressed with Dr. Jacknow's wide-ranging knowledge, insights, and advice. She seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the latest medicines, treatments, and alternative therapies. Additionally, she has a gift for finding the perfect words with which to explain things to our son. During appointments with her I sometimes find myself wishing for a tape recorder so that I can ensure I will not forget her precise phrasing as she suggests how I might approach some difficult topic with him. We would strongly recommend Dr. Jacknow to anyone raising a child with special needs.

Dr. Jacknow is the top authority in her field. We began seeing Dr. Jacknow when my daughter was 2 years old, just recently she aged out of the pediatric practice at age 18. Her assessments, school observations, and recommendations are done in the highest professional manner. She was familiar with all of daughter's issues - ranging from international adoption, ADHD, learning disabilities, reactive attachment disorder, developmental delays, special education concerns, speech & language pathology, and psychiatric issues. Dr. Jacknow provides far more than valid assessments. She makes a personal connection with family members. After explaining the findings of each assessment, she provides a prioritized list of interventions that parents need to seek to remedy their child's issues. Dr. Jacknow brings to her work a caring, compassionate and genuine nature that our young child responded to right away. Dr. Jacknow gave us a diagnosis and helped us understand how our child thinks and what her needs are. She brought accuracy, a clearer understanding, and a solid diagnosis for our child's issues when other practitioners and educators were misdiagnosing and mystified by our daughter. Dr. Jacknow identified what our child's academic and social growth issues were going to be and, three years later, we see how accurate her insights were. Our now 10 year old daughter is doing beautifully in school and the special needs issues are being addressed specifically because we knew what to advocate for thanks to Dr. Jacknow.

Dr. Jacknow has been a great help to us for the past 13 years. She diagnosed our daughter (Aspergers Syndrome) and connected us with the therapists she needed. Dr. Jacknow treated our daughter with great respect and she always felt comfortable going to see her. Dr. Jacknow really cares about the whole family and often checked in to see how my husband and me were doing. She is kind and patient and really listens. Our daughter is 19 and is moving on to an adult doctor. We are really going to miss Dr. Jacknow!!

Dr. Jacknow is what every parent of a child with learning or other differences needs. A clear, careful diagnostician and a strong and appropriate advocate with schools & teachers. She has a great rapport with children, which is even more important.

We have seen Dr. Jacknow for over a decade after initially being referred to her by our pediatrician who described her as the best at what she does. From assessment and diagnosis and throughout the years, she has consistently provided us with the kind of support, guidance, and follow up that is either hard to find or unavailable. She is extremely thorough, caring, and compassionate during our appointments and my child enjoys seeing her. She listens carefully and is clear when discussing options and solutions that are specific to our needs and makes sure that all our concerns are addressed. She also covers areas that we may not have thought of and gives us things to consider regarding the future. She is upfront with her fees, promptly returns phone calls, and takes care of our needs in a timely manner. In addition, she is knowledgeable of local resources that may be beneficial to us. Dr. Jacknow's interventions and recommendations probably saved our marriage and brought peace back in to our home. She worked with our son's issues in a caring, ethical, highly professional and empathetic manner. I highly recommend her to anyone that needs help raising a challenging child.

We have worked with Dr. Jacknow for several years, and as physicians and parents we can tell you she embodies the qualities concerned parents are looking for: smart, compassionate, thorough, and timely. Our son has learning differences, and Dr. Jacknow managed to: accurately diagnose how/why he learns, educuate us as parents how to create an environment both a home and in the classroom to support his learning style, taught us how to advocate for his needs at school, and most invaluable, she demystified for our son his learning style so that he could understand, self-advocate, and preserve self-esteem. He is a straight A high school student who is thriving because of the early information and support our family received. She answers every voicemail the same day, never keeps you waiting in the office, and timely writes up needed reports. Note also that Dr. Jacknow is appropriately very conservative about assigning labels to kids, and will not hand out either diagnoses or medications unless it is warrented. As a physician, that is most resassuring, and a testimony to her abilities and character. I have referred many children and parents to her, and all felt heard and received answers to their questions about their children's difficulties.

Our entire family has worked with Dr. Dale Jacknow for the past 8 years. Examining with her thorough approach our son, then our daughter, and eventually my husband have all been diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. Dr. Jacknow worked with us to create a wholistic therapy program including medication and behavioral techniques. Her extended resource list availed us of family counseling, organizational strategies, assistive technologies, and educational therapists. She has also made herself available for in-school assessments and teacher team meetings. Dr. Jacknow has been a vital part of our educational selections as our children transitioned between schools. Her neurodevelopmental assessments have resulted in significant accomodations being granted both children in school and entrance exam testing. We all enjoy working with Dr. Jacknow as she is a thoughtful listener and tailors solutions to each individual and the family as a whole. When we initially arranged for Dr. Jacknow's services we talked through the process and fee structure so there were no surprises.
