Totally changed my idea of what therapy was. Dr. Dina called me back a few minutes after I left a message for him. He had a great speaking voice and it sounded like I was speaking to an old friend. He thanked me for reaching out and ask me just a little bit about what I wanted help with. I felt very comfortable right away. He wasn't in my insurance plan, but he lowered his field little bit so that I could still get to meet him for the first time and decide whether we could work together. He came to the door dressed in casual, nicely colored, slightly funky in a good way clothes. The first session alone was just mostly me talking about my past and what's going on in the present; Dr. Sapen connected a few of the dots for me and I could suddenly see where our exploration of my life my lead. It just seemed that he got me, but he kept this modest, regular guy demeanor the whole time… kind of good looking, youngish guy who turns out to be a lot older than he looks and speaks both in a very… scholarly way (I checked out his really interesting book by the way) and in words that make some pretty heavy psychological ideas make personal sense, so that it's not like I'm in class trying to keep up with the subject I don't understand. I've been working with Dr. Dina for almost 3 months now and everything I thought at the beginning has been true, very reliable. Things make so much more sense, I'm starting to make better choices in my personal life (I won't get into that here), and I always leave session feeling both a lot of emotion but also very hopeful, because no matter what we talk about we always make it make sense , And we always focus on the hope, and what I'm capable of doing, and some secret about how I am wired or what my experience has been that has taught me to live and choose the way I do. It's really cool… Definitely not what I thought therapy was going to be like. So, I haven't seen other therapists since I was a little kid, but I think you have to say this guy is brilliant, really nice, and really good at his job. It seems a lot of other people online think so too. If you're worried about the money, dr. Dina isn't too expensive and he always goes out of his way to make his fee what a person is able to afford, to a point. You wanted to know a lot about my income, my work, but also my obligations, and made sure that seeing him once a week would be affordable. Just give him a try, I promise you, this is the kind a guy you'd want to hang out with, but you get him all to yourself with all your secrets, and feel safe there.

Just exactly what a contemporary, intelligent patient, especially nervous and first time, or someone who's been burned before, wants from a face to face therapist. No attitude of superiority, but a strong sense of LOVING his work, finding what there is to love in each person, and discovering as much about why your life has been good, what you already have to work with, than about "pathology", defenses. etc. Like a great conversation about yourself with a scary-smart nice guy, except he happens to be your doctor and won't get tired of it being all about me. Just a really, sincerely positive person with an amazing mind and a kind heart.
