Dr. David Harry Mielke, MD

Based on what I can find out about this listing for Dr. Mielke, I have to conclude this is the same Dr. Mielke that treated me many years ago, late 1983-1985. I can’t thank Dr. Mielke enough...he literally saved my life and made it possible for me to lead a normal and productive life once I recovered from what to me seemed to be headed to life in an institution. I was in bad shape, really really bad shape, but by the grace of God was put in the care of Dr. Mielke. I was 31 when I was transplanted from Pittsburgh, PA to New Orleans due to my husband’s job relocating us there. My world collapsed around me and I was in total despair. At my initial visit Dr Mielke asked if I thought I should be admitted to the hospital, but I didn’t really want to do that. We agreed on trying an antidepressant, and he stressed if at any point I felt so desperate that I considered taking my life, to call him immediately. Well about 3 weeks later, I reached rock bottom and sat looking at my bottle of… pills thinking how easily I could put an end to my mental torture. But I could hear Dr. Mielke saying “call me”, so I did. He instructed me to go to Tulane Medical Center immediately and he would be there waiting for me. So my husband left work and delivered me to the hospital as instructed and sure enough Dr. Mielke was there waiting for me just as he promised. I was not an easy case to crack, but Dr. Mielke always gave me hope, even when I was convinced there was no hope for me. I can’t explain how he always knew the right words to say and what the next step should be, but he did, and he gave me the faith I needed to hang on and keep fighting and believe that eventually I would get better. In my opinion he has a gift when it comes to knowing how to ‘fix’ people and make their minds whole again. I was hospitalized for 6 weeks and finally Dr. Mielke convinced me I was ready to go home. I was terrified, but he reassured me over and over, if I was having any issues, he was a phone call away. And I really needed that because immediately upon my release from the hospital, I had to travel long distance with my husband on business. I had my ups and downs, good and bad days, but I never did have to call Dr. Mielke outside of a regular appt. Over the course of the next year, I continued my sessions with Dr. Mielke until my husband got transferred back to a Pittsburgh. By then, I had become pregnant and was mentally stable, so I didn’t seek the care of a new psychiatrist. I am now 66 yrs old and have remained mentally healthy, which I attribute to Dr. Mielke. I am forever grateful to him for giving me back my life. I hope this is being listed for the Dr. Mielke I think it is, and I hope he sees it! Dr. Mielke literally gave my mother back to me. She had been under treatment at a local psychiatric hospital for almost two years with no improvement on her bipolar disorder. Dr. Mielke was recommended to us. We took our mother to him, and within weeks, my mother's personality returned. He taught my wife and I how to recognize when she needed to return to him for additional treatment which we did whenever the need arose. He treated my mother for many years after that and my wife, children and I will be forever grateful to him. God bless him.
