Dr. Demetrius Leon Woods

Dr. Woods never read my birth plan, is a poor communicator, ignored my wishes for an unmedicated labor, and, now that I have had the chance to read my medical record years later, administered opioid pain medication without my consent. But my primary complaint, one that I have been struggling since my son was born, was that he suggested 'moving the labor along' but didn't explain the full details to me. I didn't understand that he was suggesting inducing labor. If I had, I would have refused. If he had read my birth plan, he would have known that I was not interested in unnecessary medication. Instead, he was about to end his shift and rather than let my labor progress naturally, (I had been laboring for only 5 hours) he induced me. Within 15 minutes, nurses and doctors were rushing into the room because they could not find my son's faint heartbeat. WHAT WAS PROGRESSING ALONG AS NORMAL LABOR WAS SUDDENLY AN EMERGENCY. I was rushed into the OR for an emergency C-section. My… son was born with a low heart rate but soon recovered. I was physically "ok;" the surgery went well by all medical accounts. But emotionally, it took years to recover. I was not able to hold my baby immediately after he was born; not able to nurse him immediately; not able to have the moment of learning his sex right after he was born. Dr. Woods disregarded my wishes - the plans I had written when I was level-headed and not in labor. He got his wish though - another high-cost C-section right before he finished his shift. I never saw him again and when I called his office at least 3 times to try to understand what had happened, he never returned my calls. I received a survey weeks later and explained how I felt my wishes had been ignored, and I was disrespected as a patient by him not taking the time to return my requests to talk to him. I never got a response, not from Emory or him. Since this traumatic experience, I have spoken to many friends who were also patients of Emory OB, and they ALL, every single one of them, complain about Dr. Woods cavalier attitude and poor treatment of his patients. I would not recommend Dr. Woods, and for the chance that he might be on-call during your labor, I wouldn't recommend being a patient of Emory OBGyn.

Dr. Woods was very thorough. I have been recommending every one who has issues to Dr. Woods since my surgery.

Dr. Woods is not only extremely sweet, he's very knowledgeable about his field. I'm normally not comfortable with male physicians, but I will continue to see him.
