Dr. Denise Anne Spence, MD

Dr. Spence is the best primary care doctor I've had. She is always very responsible, replies to my messages in a timely manner. Appointments are easy to make. I am very satisfied.

I have seen Dr. Spence over several years and my colleagues have as well. If you want a social worker vs. a highly trained diagnostician and health tactician, then I suppose you need to go elsewhere. Her care and advice and early responses to illness to prevent further complications or a longer course of illness has been exceptional.

I am a male, 50+ years old. Despite what I've read on previous reviews, I find Dr. Spence to be quite an excellent Doctor! She has been my primary for several years, during which I've had several annual and some impromptu visits. Each time she is courteous, professional, knowledgeable and consistently helpful and accurate. She may not have an overly warm bedside manner for some, but for me, I find her manner to be just what a doctor ordered. If you need warm and fuzzy, maybe look elsewhere, but if you're looking for professional care, she's your doctor. P.S. Her staff are also all of the above, so the experience has always been first-rate.

I have been a patient of Dr. Spence for quite a number of years. Over 10. She is proficient and not an alarmist but I feel that she never really takes the time to listen to me. She is always typing away and looking at her computer screen but never looks me in the eye. I recently had some high blood pressure issues which she did not address to my satisfaction. The nurse took my blood pressure was alarmed it was so high and said she would have Dr. Spence look at it when she got in. I waited all day for a call back and left 2 messages. This was on a Friday. I was so upset that I went to Medexpress on that Sunday. I was met with kindness , compassion and reassurance that I would be fine. Plus some instructions on diet, etc. My call was never returned until Monday by the nurse saying Dr. Spence was busy and didn't have time to look at her messages. I was leaving town that day on a week long working "vacation". A prescription was being called into my pharmacy. When I went to get it it had… never been called in and my Pharmacist had to track down the prescription. Today I had a follow up appointment. Dr. Spence could tell I was upset and suggested that this just wasn't working and to find another doctor. Believe me I will.

Avoid this doctor. She'll do the bare minimum, but is extremely dismissive and has no time for you. stayed with her this long since her office was convenient to get to. No more. I had a urinary tract infection that I'd called the urgent care line for, and they arranged for me to submit a sample early in the morning. I got a notification that the results were out quite early in the morning but never given any follow up. I called twice, since I needed a prescription to address the pain before leaving on a trip. The receptionist was very kind; Denise Spence never bothered to respond. In the end I went and sat in the waiting room after work until she had a minute (again, waiting room folks were really kind and empathetic). When Spence came out, she was rude and dismissive, and started talking loudly about my private medical results right there in the waiting room with other patients there. Only when I burst into tears did she take me aside and brusquely write a prescription.. It was the… worst experience with a doctor I've ever had, and I am finding a different PCP.

Have been seeing Dr Spence for many years. She always listens to anything I have a concern about and offers advice on what "we" should do to follow up. She is open to alternative approaches and concerned about the patient first! She treats women like they have a brain!

Incompetent, no empathy. Really awful doctor. Wish I had read these reviews before going to her!

I have been seeing Dr. Spence for several years, and have tried to like her...but am now looking for another doctor. When I come in for a check up or a follow-up, she is always just staring at her computer, and asking me the same questions about my medical history, every time. She prescribes the medicines that I have and writes out referrals for the things that I ask...but there is no insight or thought that she offers independently. I was concerned about severe acid reflux issues, and her only answer was -- well, you should lose weight. She does nothing outside of the basics, and even then she seems rushed and disinterested - like she is just checking off a box. When, at the end of a physical, I asked her to look at a polyp that concerned me - she seemed put out by the request, told me it was nothing, and made me feel bad for taking her time. If I had an issue that required some thought or insight, I would not trust her. Everything is by the numbers and there is a total disconnect and… lack of empathy.

Just had to speak to Dr. Spence as she is the on-call doctor for my regular doc and I think I’m having an early term miscarriage. She called me back and was laughing at a joke on the other end while she waited for me to pick up (it took me two “hello?s” for her to respond to me), she didn’t bother to leave the room where other people were chatting while we spoke, and she told me curtly, “I don’t know what to tell you. Go to the emergency room.” Sorry to interrupt your Friday night. I hope I never have to deal with this woman again.
