When I was in my ENT residency at UCLA Medical Center, I became fascinated with the potential for cochlear implantation as a treatment for hearing impaired patients whose deafness was too severe for a conventional hearing aid. Fortunately, my fellowship director at the University of Iowa, Dr. Bruce Gantz, was at that time performing the first major research trials of multichannel cochlear implants in adults and children. Needless to say, cochlear implantation has become a huge success and a routine intervention for improving the quality of life for appropriately selected candidates with severe hearing loss. I have had the honor to perform cochlear implant surgery for over 30 years. At Loyola University Medical Center, we have one of the largest CI programs in the Midwest supported by our outstanding CI Audiologists. Personally, it brings me tremendous joy to help restore the gift of hearing.
