Dr. Edward Patten has the following 2 specialties
- General Practice
A general practitioner is similar to a family practitioner in that they treat patients of all ages with a variety of health concerns. These doctors treat everyday ailments, some acute and chronic diseases, and also provid health checkups, physicals, inoculations and preventative care.
General practitioners differ from family practitioners because they are not required to complete an additional residency in family medicine after completing their medical school residency. Like family practitioners, general practitioners will also provide referrals to patients who are in need of a specialist.
- Addiction Medicine
An addiction medicine specialist is a doctor who treats patients with addictions to substances like drugs and alcohol or, in some cases, behaviors like gambling. Many of these specialists also treat the diseases that stem from these addictions.
These physicians are specially trained to prevent and treat the disease of addiction via psychiatric means, or other fields of medicine like family or internal medicine.

I came to Dr.Patten at Riverside General Hosp because of my opiate abuse and wanted to stop, and this hosp took me when I couldnt afford to pay, and didnt have ins.Dr.Patten hit me dead on. He knows what he is doing, and he is VERY good at reading people. My only complaint is his God Awful staff. They refused me medical attention, medications, and went against Dr's orders at every oppurtunity to make my detox as painful as possible due to the fact, and I quote from the nurse herself " I have more respect for the psych patients than I do you addicts!" not only was I sick from detoxing, but I came down ill and had to have antibiotics, and I.V. fluids. I was running a fever, vomitng, and had diarrheay and was bed ridden for 5 days. The nurses refused to give me the meds that Dr.Patten prescribed for above mentioned maladies. They refused to come t my room. They would come and holler at me for not coming to the nurses station to request my meds, when I clearly was in no shape to be up moving about. And when i finally did get up on the 5th day to beg for some anti-vomiting medicine, i passed out and slammed face first into the floor. I ended up with a mild concussion, fractured cheek bone, and small hairline fracture in my nose. Not to mention the bruising from head to shoulder to hip bone. This happened on Sat Feb 6th. I had called my husband to come get me I was done with detoxing and needed better care that he could give me. Well, after that fall they made me stay one more day for observation after Dr.Patten came in to check on me....but he never did a real physical from the fall. I had to call my personal Physician to come into his office on Sun Feb 7, 2010 to give me x-rays as they refused to send me to another hosp for atleast that. So, Dr.Patten IS pretty good about detoxing and he knows what hes talking about and doing, but his orders will NOT be followed. And definitely do not expect any compassion from his staff as they do not understand that addiction IS a disease. I didnt choose to be one. It just happened, and addiction is heredity and runs deep in my family. I came to this place for help. And to be treated like a human. What I got was far beyond what I or anyone ever deserved. Dr.Patten was my bright spot though. I just wish his orders would have been followed. There was no reason for me to suffer so severely. And to top it off....one nurse came to my room and jumped me for calling out to an orderly to ask the nurse to come to me.....I was in bed hanging over a waste basket violently ill and couldnt get up to get her, and thats all that she cared about....so she withheld the phenegren for my vomiting to teach me a lesson. So, to sum it up....he is a good doc, but because of Riverside, I would think twice before going in. I'd rather sit it out at home and go cold turkey. But I'm still clean.
