We found Dr. Avner to see our very ill son after an extensive national review of pediatric kidney specialists. As the senior editor of the standard 2 volume reference textbook of childhood kidney disease:Pediatric nephrology, 6th edition; the world's expert in childhood cystic kidney disases; The Director of the Research Institute of the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin; and a Research Dean of the Medical College of Wisconsin. He lived up to his reputation as a compassionate, talented M.D. who put us all at ease immediately with his engaging matter. He diagnosed a problem that had puzzled many others, set up a care plan for our local physician that allowed us to return home with confidence and a sense of relief. Simply superb!!
Internationally known expert in Childhood kidney Disease (senior editor of gold-standard 2 volume texbook of the specialty-Pediatric Nephrology, Springer-Verlag, 2009).Director, and Principal Investigator of one of only 2 NIH-funded Research Centers of Excellence in Pediatric Nephrology in U.S. Also Directs the Children's Research Institute (CHHS) and serves as Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Pediatics and Physiology (MCW). Cutting edge researcher into the causes of genetic kidney abnormalities and development of new therapies (particularly in Polycystic Kidney Disease-PKD). Compassionate and superb clinician who spents extra time with children and their families. Not only developed a comprehensive care plan for my child which was sent to my local physician, but personally followed up (phone/email) without charge. I live outside of WI and was seeking a 2nd opinion for my child which I received along with a comprehensive outpatient evaluation. Was highly recommended by my pediatrician in Philadelphia, and my family was pleased with the visit despite travel, etc. Despite his international reputation, Dr. Avner is an unassuming , kind, and excellent physician who bonded rapidly with my 6 year old son. His team has developed new genetic therapies and is testing new pharmaceutical agents for PKD. Does not talk down to patients and their families.I recommend him without reservation.
