A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.
- Child Psychiatry
A pediatric/adolescent psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental and emotional conditions in young children and adolescents.
These specialists study psychopathological disorders and their causes in order to prevent and identify them in their patients. These disorders may be caused by biological, psychosocial, genetic, demographic, or environmental factors, a patient's history, or any combination of these factors.
Pediatric/adolescent psychiatrists treat patients through a variety of interventions including medical treatment, behavior therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy, problem solving techniques, family therapy, parent training, psychodynamic therapy, and consultation with the patient's primary care physician or school professionals.

My daughter and I have been seeing Dr. Dos Santos for almost four years and he has been wonderful. He is a quiet man, and not effusive, so some may interpret that as not caring. He knows his field very well, and is excellent at adjusting medications, as needed. For example, I was initially only on Brupopion, but it wasn't enough to help me through the gray days here in the Midwest. He added just 5 mg of Lexapro, and now I'm fine with the gray. Then I realized that I had many symptoms of ADD, and he again adjusted my meds, so now I'm on a combination of Brupopion, Lexapro, and Concerta. Psychiatry involves, in my experience, regular med checks and adjustments, and Dr. Dos Santos is the best psychiatrist I've seen. He has helped me and my daughter tremendously.
Dr. Dos Santos started off being a very open and caring doctor that would search into areas he did not have adequate knowledge of. That changed as the months progressed into a year. I was having major symptoms from the drugs prescribed by another doctor, and was having difficulty tapering off of them.Once Dr. Dos Santos had me off of the 1st drug, he had me stay on the second drug(Lorazepam). My neurological symptoms were increasing, and when I went in to show him what my body was doing, he abandoned me. I told him it was the drug, asked to be switched over to Diazepam. He said the drug couldn't do that! I asked him to get ahold of the doctors from the maker of the drug, and he would see differently. He told me that I needed to see a Neurologist because I had Dystonia. I told him that this is what my body had been doing the entire time I had been seeing him....what did he think I was talking about? He told me of different Neurologists, but would not call and refer me. I ended up going to my Primary care doctor for a referral. I saw a Neurologist, and it was indeed the drug. When I went back to him after the basic cold turkey of the drug, he basically said he could be of no assistance to me.
