Dr. Firas H. Al-Kawas, MD

Excellent compassionate doctor

If there were a "no-star" rating, that's what I would give Dr. Al-Kawas. He may have been one of the best, but it's time for him to retire. I was referred to Dr. Al-Kawas. Without even seeing me, his office called to set up "the procedure." I met him about five minutes before the procedure. Following the procedure, I was experiencing some pain, but attributed it to being hungry. However, by the time I arrived home, the pain was unbearable, and I was rushed to the closest hospital. Thank goodness! There was a tear that required emergency surgery and put me into the hospital for five days. I learned later that a friend's family member had a very similar experience.

Trained many of Georgetown University practitioners who say they bow before him. Some reviewers were put off by. His laconic style. Remember the expertise is what you need, not his verbosity. He says what he needs to tell you. Another was understandably upset over a bleeding incident. Elderly patients statistically have an increased risk of colon perforation of about 1 in 100. I would bet Dr. Al Kawas’ odds are better!

Dr. Firas Al-Kawas was initially very thorough in explaining his hypothesis in relation to my GI condition; but, after he performed my colonoscopy procedure, that when I realised his lack of empathy and follow up. After my colonoscopy procedure in DC, I didn't even receive a report and had to call his office twice to get a copy. The report contain medical nomenclature that I did not understand; so, I reached out to him three times in hopes of getting an explanation in plain English and (to no surprise) received no follow up. Horrible professional .

Unassuming . Listened carefully and answered questions. Procedure went well (those working with him were considerate and gentle).

Dr Al=Kawas performed colonoscopy on my father. My father almost died from blood loss. We got home and my Dad ended up on the bathroom floor as we waited for the ambulance. He sat in a large pool of his own blood. Even one of the EMT's almost lost it at the sight. He was life flighted to G-town. The Dr Al-Kawas did not visit my Dad. His staff (maybe a resident) lied about my fathers blood count. My Mom and I had to fight to get my Dad the care he needed. Haven't said this before regarding a doctor - but stay away from this one.

Rude, dismissive and he was unwilling to provide answers to our questions. He repeatedly cut us off while explaining symptoms. His staff was unable to explain why specific procedures were ordered. In fact, his secretary did not even know the meaning of basic medical terms. We left the office more confused and frustrated than we we arrived. This is horribly disappointing considering that this is Johns Hopkins.

Did not perform proceedure well, serious complications and horrible follow up care. avoid him at all cost!

I came to Dr. Al-Kawas because of his reputation as a top Gastro-Intestinal specialist and for his excellent reputation among his patients. I found this to be exactly as described and more. I am very pleased with his care and intend to refer him to my friends and acquaintances.

Have to wait for one hr and a half to see this doctor. The doctor and his staff does not seem to care about how long the patient is being waiting. No apologies from the doctor for been late. If you call to his office to get a prescription it takes more than three weeks to hear back from them. I would not recommend this doctor to nobody. He is overrated. One star is too many.
