Dr. Francis V Dipierro, MD

Francis V. DiPierro, MD, is a Staff Cardiothoracic Surgeon in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute. He practices at EMH Elyria Medical Center, a Cleveland Clinic affiliate hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He specializes in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, including coronary artery bypass, aortic and mitral valve replacement and repair, surgery for aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection, reoperative cardiac surgery, surgery for lung cancer and benign thoracic disease, and video assisted thoracic surgery. Dr. DiPierro is a native of Cleveland, and attended Gilmour Academy where he graduated as his class valedictorian. He subsequently attended Yale University, New Haven, Conn., where he graduated magna cum laude and with Honors in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. He served his residency in general surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia., and was Chief Resident during his last year of training. During his surgical residency, he completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in cardiac mechanics and physiology at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. DiPierro completed his training with a three-year residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Cleveland Clinic, again serving as Chief Resident during his final year. During his residency at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. DiPierro received the prestigious Dr. Charles H. Bryan Award for Clinical Excellence in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic affiliate staff at EMH Elyria Medical Center in 2012, Dr. DiPierro had been a staff cardiothoracic surgeon at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, Maine for six years. While in Bangor, he served on the hospital Executive Committee. Before joining the staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center, he was in private practice as a cardiothoracic surgeon in Bangor, Maine for six years. Dr. DiPierro has published a number of scientific papers and abstracts in cardiothoracic surgery journals including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. DiPierro is a classical pianist, and enjoys swimming and nature.
