Summary

Welcome to my Web page. I am pleased to have this chance to introduce myself to you and tell you about my work as a physician and as a physician administrator at Kaiser Permanente. Since completing my residency training in pathology at UCLA Center for Health Sciences, I have worked at the Bellflower Medical Center. In 2000, I was appointed chief of the Department of Pathology. In 2006, I became the regional chief of anatomic pathology, and in 2007, I became an assistant area medical director. I am fortunate to work at Kaiser Permanente both as a clinician and as an administrator, and I strive to make our organization provide the best possible health care for our patients. BiographyI was born in Illinois and have also lived in New York, Maryland, and Missouri, and for over 30 years in Southern California. My father has a PhD in chemistry and worked in private industry, at the National Institutes of Health, and as a professor of chemistry at UC San Diego with a joint appointment in the Department of Pathology. My mother was a dental hygienist, so my parents provided me with a strong background in health care. I attended Revelle College at UC San Diego, majored in chemistry, and then attended medical school at Saint Louis University. I chose pathology for my professional career, as I enjoyed the scientific nature of the work. I also enjoy teaching, and I am an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Pathology at UC Irvine.About my practiceMuch of my time is spent overseeing hospital processes and computer systems, as well as developing goals and a vision for anatomic pathology and transfusion medicine. I have been fortunate to work with highly capable and motivated physicians and support staff, all of whom are interested in providing high-quality results and excellent service. In general, I try to standardize policies and procedures, incorporate national guidelines, and unify practices to improve efficiencies and patient safety. I also try to innovate by adopting new technologies that will improve not only our quality and service, but also our education and research. One of the great aspects of working for Kaiser Permanente is the opportunity to maintain skills in your specialty and connect with patient care, and I am still able to set time aside for surgical pathology cases. How I thriveFor me, the key ways to stay well are eating right, getting enough rest, and maintaining a positive attitude. I tend to work hard, so I need to recognize when to take a break. My favorite ways to relax include bicycling, water sports, golfing, crossword puzzles, reading, and playing piano.
