Dr. Gary R Hudak, MD

Gary Hudak MD is Island Hospital Medical Director for Psychiatry and is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Hudak integrates the vital component of psychiatric services into the overall healthcare offered by Island Hospital's wide-ranging staff of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Hudak received his BA in Mathematics from Northeastern University, Boston, MA, where he remained to pursue graduate work in Cell Biology. He then attended the University of Connecticut for further graduate studies in Animal Genetics. His keen interest in developmental biology and his desire to work in a clinical, rather than laboratory, setting prompted him to pursue a career in medicine at George Washington University, Washington, DC, where he earned his MD in 1982.

Enrolled in the Armed Forces Health Scholarship Program, Dr. Hudak fulfilled his Internship at Naval Hospital, Oakland, CA; his Psychiatry Residency at Naval Hospital, San Diego; and his …Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC.

Dr. Hudak brings 23 years of professional experience, primarily providing psychiatric services to active duty military and eligible family members, including children and adolescents. Recognized for his experience, education and expertise, he is a Certified Diplomate of the American College of Forensic Examiners, American Psychotherapy Association, American Board of Psychological Specialties - Psychological Disabilities Evaluation, and the American Board of Psychological Specialties - Child Psychology.

As Medical Director for Psychiatry, Dr. Hudak consults with Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatric and other practitioners with patients experiencing psychological needs, which typically involve Depression, Anxiety, Bi-Polar Disorder, ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Dementia or Alzheimer's. During clinical consultation with the patient, he provides working diagnosis and discusses a mutually agreeable treatment plan. This may include medication, short-term problem-oriented therapy, care provided by a local mental health agency, 12-step group participation, or referral, as well as further diagnostics as needed.
