Why did you choose your profession?
In my family, there are three generations of physicians who have practiced within the Allentown Hospital / Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. Not many families can say that. I believe that medicine is the "most glorious and rewarding profession."
Tell us about your family of doctors.
My father was a gastroenterologist. He did his internship in Allentown and his training in Philadelphia. My son, Dr. Gavin Barr, Jr., is currently working out of the Emergency Department at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.
Have you ever done any volunteer work that used your professional skills?
I was in the Air Force for two years, I was Vice President of the Medical Department at Lehigh Valley Hospital for 22 years, and I was on the Board of Directors for 15 years.
What do you do in your spare time?
I spend a lot of it with my 15 grandchildren.
