Gerald Adrian Hoeltge, MD, FCAP, trained at Cleveland Clinic and joined the Staff in 1977. A specialist in transfusion medicine, Dr Hoeltge has a particular interest in perioperative autotransfusion ' that part of 'bloodless medicine' that allows the patient to recycle blood shed during surgery. He is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, hematology and blood banking. Outside of Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Hoeltge serves the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) as its elected President (2008-2010). CLSI writes consensus standards for medical laboratory quality and practice used around the world. For 25 years, he has been one of the Commissioners of the Laboratory Accreditation Program of the College of American Pathologists. He is a frequent lecturer on the subject of laboratory quality.
