Summary

About Me

Prior to becoming a physician, I did research in clinical chemistry at Heidelberg University in Germany. I received my medical degree in Heidelberg and graduated magna cum laude with a doctoral thesis. My first encounter with America was my research fellowship in biomechanics in the Department of Orthopaedics at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore (1981 – 1983). I started to like the American way of combining research and medicine. After my orthopaedic residency at the University of Heidelberg I returned to the United States and did a 2nd residency in Orthopaedics at Yale New Haven Medical Center. During this time I was awarded the Best Research Project as Chief Resident.

After my residency I did a fellowship in spine surgery and joined as assistant professor the faculty at UC San Francisco from 1991 to 1996. I was elected Chief of Orthopaedics at UCSF Mount Zion Medical Center from 1992 to 1996. In 1996, I was asked to become Chief of Spine Surgery at the Kantonsspital in St. Gallen, one of the largest and most historic spine services in Switzerland. I stayed there until the end of 1998 at which time my family asked me to return to the sunnier California. I then joined Kaiser Permanente in February 1999 and I am presently serving as Chief of the Regional Spine Surgery Department.

I belong to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Cervical Spine Research Society and the European Spine Society. I have written more than 20 publications and 7 book-chapters and have lectured nationally and internationally on spinal topics. I am a reviewer for the journal "SPINE" (the largest and most important journal for spinal disorders).

My Healthcare Practice

I have specialized in spine surgery as it is one of the most complex challenges for the patient as well as for the surgeon. My vast experience in this field helps my patients ease their fear before surgery. Every patient is important to me and I spend as much time as possible with them. I like them to understand their disease and explain to them in detail the origin of their problem. In this way they can prevent further damage to their spine. They are able to participate in their recuperation before and after surgery in a better way.

My specialty is care of the spine with an emphasis on degenerative disorders, tumors, adult deformities, and trauma.

Ensuring Data Transparency and Trust: A Guide to Vitals Doctor Listings and Reviews

Our provider data is gathered directly from physicians and publicly available databases. Providers who verify their profiles gain the ability to update information, offering additional details about their specialties, education, treated conditions, performed procedures, and accepted insurances.

Reviews on Vitals are submitted by users only. Recognizing the valuable insights these reviews offer into a doctor's reputation, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Importantly, providers cannot delete or alter reviews independently. Reviews can only be deleted or changed following an internal assessment by our customer service team.

Your feedback is highly valued and we encourage you to contact our support team should you encounter any issues.
