Dr. Howard D Merzel, MD

I have been seeing Dr. Merzel for 15 years. He is very down to earth and you can tell he is genuinely frustrated when treatments are not working as expected. I have had over 8 colonoscopies with him and have always had good experiences with the procedure. I highly recommend Dr Merzel and several friends and family have also used him and continue to do so.

Not a patient of his, but he has my medical records from my previous doctor, Dr. Kornfield. Twice now I have requested to have my records forwarded to my new doctor and they either tell me they didn't receive the fax or couldn't find my records. I found out today that they don't want to send patients records because they are in another building and would take extra work to get them. That's why they give excuses on not sending your records. So glad I never went to this doctor as a patient if this is how his staff is run!!

Had upper endoscopy and colonoscopy performed by him yesterday. He obviously wasn’t sure why I was even there (I’ve only met his PA and she ordered these procedures) and was visibly annoyed about being there. His team couldn’t even keep me sedated for the entire procedure (I’m only 127lbs, shouldn’t have been difficult) causing me to wake up and I will never be able to forget the pain and discomfort I experienced during that time. Afterward he told me they found nothing and he suggested I “just ignore the pain for a while” when I’ve had chronic pain for over a year now (mind you he literally shrugged when I told him and had no other suggestions) - obviously I’ve tried ignoring it hoping it’d go away before resorting to a colonoscopy at 26 years old. I will never recommend this practitioner.

Whatever you do, don't schedule an appointment with the nurse practitioner Emily--she is sarcastic and not knowledgeable in gastrointerology--seeing her is at your own risk!

Along with really knowing what he's doing, Dr. Merzel is very down-to-earth, very real. When talking with him, you'll feel you both have known each other for years. I like that.

The doctor lacks personality. You do not feel you are important to him. It is impossible to read his mind so you may leave his office with unanswered questions. On the other hand, he has a great staff in the Geneseo office.

It was just for a upper scope but he was very nice and inforative.

OMG...never again

This guy is awful. He is rude, condescending and basically told me I "have to control my stomach problems with my mind." Huh? He did an endoscopy (it sounds stupid but I'm not sure he actually even did it) and said everything was rosy. I have been suffering severe heartburn since 1988 and my esophagus is just perfect! Either I'm the luckiest chump on the face of the earth or he's totally incompetent. All my other gastro symptoms are apparently all in my crazy little head. If I could give him less than one star, I would.

reading other reviews was like reading my own story. i have had very painful and embarassing stomach issues that were quickly dismissed by dr. merzel. he talked down to me the two times i saw him, rushed the entire visit, told me my problems were in my head, after basically begging to order tests because im in pain all the time, constantly get sick and have trouble moving around, he finally did. He might be very knowledgable but i wouldnt know based on the time he gave me. i was extremly disappointed and will be seeing a better doctor for next visit. I was ready to walk out i was so angry
