If you have a back injury or unexplained back pain, your doctor might refer you first to a radiologist and then to an orthopedic spinal surgeon. They specialize in the spine and can diagnose and treat spinal diseases such as scoliosis. They can also treat spinal injuries such as a displaced disc or a fracture, as well as disc degeneration and narrowing that occurs due to aging.
However, when your injury or condition affects the spinal canal or spinal cord, it’s typically better to consult with a neurosurgeon. It's worth noting that, while they're both referred to as surgeons, they can also recommend treatments that don't require an operation, such as non-surgical decompression therapy.
- Orthopedic Surgery
An orthopaedic surgeon is a physician who specializes in diagnosis and surgical treatment of injuries and disorders involving the musculoskeletal system, such as hip replacements and arthroscopic knee surgery.
In addition to treating trauma to the musculoskeletal system, these doctors also deal with sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors and congenital disorders.

I found Dr. Chapman to be an excellent surgeon. I did not inform them of my profession. I expected them to pass the 'smell test' which he did. I have 30 years experience and my last place of employment was at PMH. I have no problems with the procedure now but it did take a while to heal. You have to give it time. I read he thinks you are a drug addict if you request narcotics. You should understand that the DEA stays on their backs and that the narcotics eventually will be ineffective. I am sorry you others had a bad experince and wish you the best. I have DDD but do excellent with that problem. I take OTC motrin. The only problem I have with Dr. Huntley is he golfs? EW!!!!!! from east texas, doc.
He is rude and can barely walk himself. He won't listen to his patients at all. His patients are long term and after years of treatment are still in miserable pain. He makes his money on injections and surgeries vs giving people the pain medicine that works and would make both unnecessary. He will call you addicted if you tell him you prefer pain medication. How much money does he make writing a prescription? None or very little. How much money does he make giving injections/surgeries? Well he makes hundreds of thousands of dollars so therein lies the reason he will always make you have injections and do surgery and withhold pain medicine until you are in such pain and can no longer function. The idea is to keep you coming back monthly for the visit charge per person of over $300.00 which he gets from the insurance companies. He makes a fortune in visits alone which is why he overbooks and spends little time with anyone.
I had 3 surgeries before this doctor operated on me. He told me the surgery would be just like the lumbar fusions. He was wrong on so many levels. He gave me what is called "flat back syndrome". Which means he took the curve out of my back. I now cannot walk upright but have to lean forward, use a cane, cannot walk more than 1/2 of a short block before the spasms are so great I cannot go on and am always in pain. He did NOT tell me any of this before surgery. He only said it would be just like the other lumbar fusions. The other fusions gave me some discomfort, if I over did things, but not too bad. He ruined my life. I am in bed most days, cannot work, and after shopping with an electric cart or hanging on to a shopping buggy the pain and inflammation is unbearable at times. He is a doctor of few words and when I tried to talk to him about the problem he was of no help and took no responsibility. Please find another doctor. Good Luck.
