Dr. Ioan Cristian Badau, MD

Very nice doctor. Explained everything clearly. Kind and helpful. Very good listener regarding mental health issues. I immediately asked him to be my primary care physician after our first visit.

Dr. Badau was immediatley pessimistic about treating me. I came in because I was feeling suicidal, I wanted to be prescribed medication to treat my, already diagnosed, bipolar and depression, and I was trying to avoid hospitalisation. He told me that my situation looked bad to him, that he supposed I was seeking a quick fix to help me and that most reactions to medications are psychosomatic and that I might as well take any pill. He told me that the most popular medications are not necessarily the most effective and prescribed me an obscure medication called Latuda which is primarily used to treat schizophrenia, is used to treat patients who are treatment resistant to other medications and has the most side effects of any other bipolar medication he could have prescribed. On my second appointment with Dr. Badau I told him that the new medication, Lamictal, which I asked to be prescribed after having a negative reaction to the Latuda, was working well and that my emotions were less… extreme. He told me I wasn't being specific enough in describing my reaction and went on to tell me that there is a distinction between existential angst and actual mental illness. He told me that my emotions are irreleveant in treating my bipolar and that mood stabilizers are not intented to treat emotions. He then told me that he shouldn't be treating me in the first place. I told him that he should, that it is part of a PCP's job to sometime treat mental illness and prescribe medication. I told him that I was in the process of seeking psychiatric help and that it was important, in the meantime, to take a mood stabilizer to help stabilize me. All in all, Dr. Badau was irritable, argumentative, and a bit dismissive.

Finally a doctor with acute awareness and attention to detail. Nice manners, educates patient, on time. He cares.

I saw Dr. Badau when my PCP was not available. He was very thorough and had a great manner! I have requested him as my PCP now that mine has relocated.
