Dr. Irvin Sahni, MD

Dr. IRVIN SAHNI, MD is a BOARD CERTIFEIED SPINE SURGEON

Fellowship trained spine surgeon Dr. Irvin Sahni grew up in West Houston. After completing high school at the top of his class at James E. Taylor High School, he attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas. At Baylor, he completed a degree in chemistry, conducted undergraduate scientific research, and published two articles in organic chemistry. He also gave lectures regarding his research during his undergraduate years at various universities.

After graduating at the top of his class, Dr. Sahni went on to attend Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Baylor College of Medicine is located in the largest medical center in the world, the Texas Medical Center. Baylor College of Medicine is consistently listed in U.S. News & World Report as one of the top medical schools in the United States.

After graduating from Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Sahni interviewed around the country at some of the nation’s most prestigious …orthopedic residency programs. These included programs such as Columbia in New York City and UCSF in California. Ironically, after interviewing at these programs, Dr. Sahni felt that the best program was Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He ranked the Baylor program number one and was subsequently accepted.

During his time as a resident, Dr. Sahni conducted scientific research at the basic level in hip biomechanics as it related to total hip arthroplasty, knee biomechanics as it related to wear in total knee arthroplasty, and spine biomechanics as it related to intervertebral motion. He published multiple papers in scientific journals, and his abstracts were accepted for presentation at the Orthopedic Research Society and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons national meeting. During his residency, he worked in seven different hospitals, including the Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital for children, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Veterans Administration hospital.

After completing his orthopedic residency, Dr. Sahni knew that Baylor College of Medicine was not only the best place to pursue academic excellence, but also the best place to obtain clinical experience as it was located in the largest medical center in the world. He therefore chose to continue his training at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center and completed his fellowship in spinal surgery.

Although this was primarily an orthopedic spinal surgery fellowship, Dr. Sahni spent a great deal of time operating with neurosurgeons. This is where he learned many neurosurgical techniques and became acclimated with using the neurosurgical microscope. This was also where he learned many of the principles of minimally invasive spinal surgery, as well as how to perform spinal injections.

Dr. Sahni has been pleased to serve the Seguin and New Braunfels communities since 2003.
