Dr. James Fernando Herrera, MD

We paid for diagnosis and 6 months later he still hasn't deliverd the report. I don't know how he stays in business.

Our family had seen a number of psychiatrists that could not help our daughter who had severe depression, but Dr. Herrera was different in that he has an excellent combination of high expertise, responsiveness and most of all persistence. Dr. Herrera eventually diagnosed and treated our daughter and likely saved my her life. Over the years I have referred family, neighbors and even arranged for him to give talks at my kids schools. When a friend I referred to him said they were concerned because of a couple poor reviews I had to see for myself as all the people I had referred have given nothing but thanks for the referral. After reading the reviews and polling friends and family I referred, I must conclude that at least a couple of the poor reviews are about another person. Dr. Herrera's evaluation took two and a half hours and was the most thorough we had experienced. One statement must be incorrect as it claimed he just writes prescriptions and sends you away but in the 6 years… of working with him he has only sent prescriptions electronically and was engaged on each meeting. I don't usually write reviews but after what my friend said I had to check it out and write one as if not for Dr. Herrera my daughter may not have graduated from high school and now be in college!

Such a disappointment. Don't know how he stays in business. He doesn't ask too many questions or address concerns -- most of our 50 min appts. ended up being about 15-20 min. He writes the Rx, hands you the bill and on to the the next patient. Then when you need a Rx refill, he's impossible to track down. When he's on vacation, he has no back-up person and if you're out of meds, you're out of luck. He just doesn't seem to care about anything but the money. That is my opinion.

I’ve had to call multiple times to lock down a follow on appointment. I’ve left multiple messages without getting a call back. I see a number of reviews without any commentary, tightly grouped around proximate dates-awarding 5 stars across the board. Certainly hasn’t been my experience.

Dr. Herrera has impressive credentials but has zero bedside manner and is dangerously arrogant. I'm not looking for a friendly doctor, just a competent and professional psychiatrist. However when we disagreed on a treatment plan for my teen daughter, he gave an ultimatum (which we didn't agree with and neither did the rest of the therapy team such as our individual, group, and family therapists). Subsequently, he completely cut us off AND refused to refer us to other physicians (a standard medical practice) since he would essentially blacklist us from other psychiatrists. This is beyond unprofessional--To compromise my daughter's safety and treatment, and prevent her access to another psychiatrist because his professional ego was bruised is unconscionable. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL.

I have seen a number of psychiatrists and none of them have compared to Dr Herrera. He is by far the most thorough and compassionate Dr I have ever met. He is truely concerned about the well being of his patients and not only follows up with me but my therapist as well. He is very accessible and patient in addressing all of my concerns. He is an amazing mental health professional who has a wonderful bedside manner.

Dr. Herrera truly cares about the wellbeing of his patients and works very hard to be as good as he is at what he does.
