Dr. Jason Douglas Engel, MD

An absolute disaster..DO NOT USE this guy!!!. Extremely rushed and while probably technically competent, is clearly arrogant, hurried and insensitive. Words cannot describe the extreme physical pain I endured after a badly messed up procedure. I should have taken him to court. Please avoid him!. Also, staff was very weak and ignored avoided my repeated pleas for assistance after a botched procedure.

Dr. Engel has been the worst doctor that I have ever had while living in the DC area for 10+ years. If you are looking for a specialist in urology, I strongly recommend that you go elsewhere. First, I waited over 90 minutes for a 5-minute consultation. When I had the surgery, I also waited another 90 minutes before the doctor even came into the room. Second, he is extremely arrogant in a way I have never experienced for a doctor. Lastly, he provided minimal information at the surgery and only asked if I had any questions.

Dr. Engel may be a fine doctor but his staff is disastrous. I was a patient of Dr. Losee's, and was never notified that he left the practice. Something as simple as making an appt was an 18 minute odyssey.

The office was so poorly managed it impacted the average performance of Dr. Engel. I was scheduled for an in person visit only to arrive and be told he was only doing telehealth. The paperwork continually identified the wrong side for the procedure after multiple corrections. While laying on the gurney awaiting my procedure I found out an important x-ray was not ordered. I was given the wrong addresses to go for testing on multiple occasions. The second procedure was canceled late in the day before stating the surgery center closed at 4pm after I began the prep meds.

I was told to schedule an appointment with Dr. Engel by another doctor, who thought he might be able to help with a distressing issue I have been dealing with for a long time. To start, it took about 5 phone calls and 15 minutes of being put on hold numerous times/hung up on to schedule the appointment. The waiting area is a small, crowded bench in the hall is right next to all of the exam rooms, located so close that conversations can easily be overheard from the exam rooms. The actual exam rooms where I spent most of my time waiting were cramped and windowless. I waited 90 minutes total until I was seen by the doctor (it looked like they triple booked my appointment time, and I was the last person to be seen despite arriving ahead of the other patients) - no one checked on me or warned me about this ahead of time. After waiting 90 minutes for the appointment, Dr. Engel walked in without apologizing, and then dismissed my concerns about 10 seconds into talking with me. After pushing… back, he spent maybe 5 minutes total speaking with me, but seemed like he was in a rush to leave the entire time, at one point walking into the hallway with me towards another room. He did not do a physical exam, look up anything online, or make any other efforts to diagnose or help what was going on. I highly recommend not going here.

I was referred to him by my PCP. When I arrived at his office, there were close to a dozen people in his waiting room. I was ushered past many doors into an exam room. After a while, a staff member inquired what I was doing there since I wasn't in their system. I returned to the now empty waiting room, completed the necessary paperwork, and then went back to the exam room. He showed up after about an hour. I assume he worked his way down the line of exam rooms until he got to me. His demeanor and the exam he gave me seemed unprofessional and unconcerned.

I was referred to Dr. Engel by my primary doctor. I found Dr. Engel to be down to earth, easy to speak with and he calmed my fears. He explained things to me in very plain terms and said that my issue was not a reaction to the medications I was on nor that one of the medications was not a cure all for what I had thought that it was. He prescribed two different medications that he would be able to save me money on that was less expensive than going to the normal insurance channels. I appreciated his candidness and sincerity. I will be going back to him and recommend him and his staff who treated me with professionalism, respect, and courtesy.

I’ve been going to Dr. Engel for a few years now and I find him to be a very caring, highly skilled doctor who shows true compassion for his patients. Highly recommended.

In and out of the office in an hour. Thorough consultation, friendly staff. Traveling to and parking in downtown DC was traumatic. Next time I'll go to Chevy Chase.

I went to Dr. Engle for kidney stones. First time I was there, I was left alone in a check up room for 50 minutes - appparently he had just had a serious diagnosis for another patient. I was understanding about the neglect given what apparently had happened, but he was visibly distracted and unfocused throughout my perfunctory meeting with him. The next time I visited I was told to take off all clothes and lie on a cot covered by the equivalent of a body length piece of tissue paper. I was cold, vulnerable, ignored and for all practical purposes, quite naked. For the next 40 minutes his female medical assistant (I am a male) wandered in and out of my room as I lay there under the tissue with essentially no explanation, in an office atmosphere that felt chaotic. Again, I had a perfunctory visit from him after the long wait. We agreed on a surgical procedure to break up the stones and catherterize me afterwords. After a dispute about where the operation would take place - he wanted me to… go to a facility In which he had an ownership interest that only used an anesthesia to which I have a familial risk and told me it was impossible for anyone to die due to that anesthesia (as my uncle did and my mother nearly did), we agreed on a location for the operation which went well enough. He knows what he is doing as a surgeon. Then I returned ten days later for the removal of the catheter. He essentially ripped it out of me, blamed me for "resisting," inflicting acute pain and leaving me in a puddle of stunned immobility. I was in too much pain to move for a good 25 minutes. He never checked back to see how I was, nor did he send anyone else to do so. I felt the experience was utterly unacceptable. I advised my primary care physician that in my view Dr. Engel should not be in clinical practice at all and asked her not to refer anyone else to him.
