If you’re reading this you’re doing your research. Bravo. You’re also in the right place because Dr. Jessica Shellock with Texas Back Institute is the absolute best spine specialist who you want to be treating you and doing your surgery. My back pain/issues started in 2009 when I was only 24 years old. I injured myself playing flag football with some friends and was misdiagnosed by my primary care doctor. He told me to take it easy for a few days, ice, and take Advil. Little did I know (because he never ordered any imaging or referred me to a specialist), I had a significant tear of one of the ligaments that supports the lumbar spine and discs. Not knowing any better or wanting to complain, I just kept working out, and my back got a little better but I probably just got used to the pain. I joined a Crossfit gym in 2012 and reinjured my back deadlifting. I finally sought a spine specialist (Dr Craig Chambers) in 2014 and I was diagnosed with severe disc degeneration in L4-L5 and L5-S1. After lots of PT, 3 steroid injections, and rest, I was told “there’s nothing else we can do, you’ll need to see a surgeon. Upon recommendation from my brother in law, I saw Dr. Michael Hisey in Denton. He recommended disc replacement surgery. At the time I thought the cost was high and that I could continue to deal with the pain for a while longer pushing the surgery off. My wife began working with Airrosti in July of 2017, and met Dr. Shellock at a marketing lunch with her coworkers. She instantly had a personal connection with Dr. Shellock and called me insisting that I switch and meet with her to talk about my back issues. Dr. Shellock was very personable, compassionate, knowledgeable, and confident with her diagnosis and methods of treatment. We were given options of double fusion, hybrid (1 fusion, 1 disc replacement), and two level disc replacement. We decided to go with the two level disc replacement. I was finally ready for surgery. Dr. Shellock stated that if I had waited any longer I wouldn’t have had three surgery choices I would have only had one. (The fusion) I had my surgery on December 11, 2017. Later that same night I was already standing up and walking with little to no pain that I had before. After surgery I had some tightness in my abs/stomach area (that was the point of entry for the surgery) and some tightness in my back but again the pain was little to none compared to before. After four weeks from the surgery date I had little to no pain. I was off of the muscle relaxers and pain meds about 2 weeks after surgery. As I’m writing this it’s February 7, 2018, I am currently still restricted as far as the weight they want me to lift but I am 100% pain free, I have more energy that I’ve had in years, and I can’t wait till I am completely off restrictions. I would recommend Dr. Shellock and her team to anyone who is in need of a spine specialist, both for surgical and non-surgical injuries. I have seen several other doctors in the DFW area and I believe that no one can top her. Her team is amazing. Jacob, her medical assistant, and Michelle, her scheduler are the most wonderful and easiest people to work with. She has absolutely given me a new life and my wife and I are excited about living a life without limitations again. Although I’m not too pleased that my wife knows I am able to do laundry and dishes now! Lastly, I do want to say this: I understand that there are some surgeries that can cost you a lot of money. If you are in constant pain every day and unable to have any sort of social life, you need to do the surgery (even if that means taking out a loan). The quality of life that Dr. Shellock has given me back is worth every penny.
She has a great staff but that's not enough. I was so disappointed I went to her. I don't know if her diagnosis is correct or not. I have to go to another doctor to find out. I do know her refusal to prescribe proper pain medication, cost me a trip to the Baylor emergency room. I could criticise her more, but what's the point. Other people may love her but not me.
I'm a 52-year old guy with a 20-history of back pain. Dr. Shellock was referred to me by my primary care physician. She was quick to evaluate the problem but left control of my options to me. I so appreciate her willingness to work with me. Scheduled surgery for 6-months later (my choice) and woke up pain free for the first time in years. I'm 2-months out now and I still can't believe how well its all gone. She is professional, courteous and easy to get along with. Very respectful. Hope I never need another one, but will definitely go back to Dr. Shellock if I ever do!
My mother was recently seen by Jessica Shellock? She was a new patient and this is the third doctor she has seen in regards to her neck/shoulder pain. The treatment she received from Shellock was wholly unacceptable. My mom brought her MRI and allowed the office to do more imaging, but she was told "there was no reason for her pain". She left her first pain doc because she moved and left the second because she was unhappy with incompetence of the staff, but NEVER had she been told by either of those doctors that her pain was in her head. She has 2 bulging disc in her cervical spine that have been operated on several times that resulted in significant pain relief. She doesn't take pain medication and is a tough woman who is very athletic and works out every day. To say she is imagining the pain she deals with EVERY DAY is unbelievable. I've personally worked in pain management for over a year and know how to spot a typical "pain patient", and my mother is the furthest person from that. Based on the uncaring, cold, and simply rude treatment she received from Shellock, I'm amazed she is still practicing. She left my mother in the room in tears feeling that there was nothing to do but to "suck it up" and learn to live with her pain. Needless to say, you've lost a patient and I hope this experience deters patient from choosing Texas Back Institute and Jessica Shellock.
Dr. Shellock was a God-send! I obtained three medical opinions regarding my herniated cervical disc before finding Dr. Shellock. Dr. Shellock was professional, listened effectively and was thorough in her diagnosis. I ultimately had ADR surgery to correct the issue that had caused me significant pain for over a year. I was nervous about spine surgery initially, but Dr. Shellock's team provided detailed education about the procedure and post-op expectations. After surgery, I was walking within hours...and had immediate relieve of the intense pain I had felt for a year. It has now been three months since my surgery. I feel great! I have been released for all activity. And am happy to report that I am off ALL medications. I highly recommend Dr. Shellock and her very capable staff.
