Dr. John Doyle Banovetz, MD

My daughter started losing her hearing in her early teens. Dr. Banovetz was her ENT specialist. There was no cause found for her progressive hearing loss - now she is an adult and is Deaf. He was remarkable in his caring for her as was his audiologist. Sent us to an Autoimmune Otolaryngologist at U of Iowa, did everything in his power to determine the cause of her progressive hearing loss. My daughter attended U of WI, Madison with pre-class meetings with her Profs & hired note takers until she got the university to count ASL as a foreign language credit. Then learned ASL & hired interpreters. Met her husband to be at a cooperative housing at UW-Madison, married, moved to Pasadena, CA where he completed his PhD in Astrophysics while she started a secretarial training course for Deaf women. Moved to Chicago, gave birth to my granddaughter who is now a freshman at U of Pittsburgh. Dr. Banovetz, more than any of her middle and High-school teachers, gave her credit for her smarts and adaptability. And with that - instead of being deaf & dumb - she’s Deaf and brilliant. Certainly it’s a tribute to her strong ego & sense of self but also to Dr. Banovetz who was her champion. Thank you, Dr. Banovetz
