Dr. John P Kupferschmid has the following 2 specialties
- Vascular Surgery
Vascular surgeons treat and manage disorders in your veins, arteries and your lymphatic system to ensure blood circulation in your heart and in brain is the best it can be. They're well-versed on how your vascular system works with the rest of your body and they can treat conditions that may cause blockages or buildup.
They can perform many of the same diagnostic testing as interventional radiologists can, such as angiography and MRIs. In addition to diagnosis, they provide critical care and treatment for aneurysms, artery blockages and trauma injuries that involve your veins. They can also help patients manage diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol as well as treat artery disease. Treatment for more serious cases might include bypass surgery or surgery to remove plaque.
- Pediatric Surgery
A pediatric surgeon is a qualified surgeon who has additional training in performing surgery on young patients, including fetuses (neonatal or fetal surgery), infants, children, adolescents and teenagers.
Because pediatric patients are still growing and developing, they are often more difficult to operate on than adults. These patients have smaller bodies and smaller organs requiring even more of a precise and measured approach by a surgeon.
Some of the conditions that may require the care of a pediatric surgeon are congenital malformations, such as cleft lip and palate, abdominal wall defects, like hernias, deformities of the chest wall, childhood tumors, like neuroblastomas and separation of conjoined twins.

Dr. Kup is fabulous with kids! From the moment he walked into the room, he treated my son like he was the main event. Many times doctors ignore the child and talk only the parent. I was truly blown away at how great he related to my son and made him feel completely comfortable. He explained things to him on his 7 year old level and asked questions about his life, not just the medical stuff. We were completely happy with Dr. Kup and would highly recommend him to anyone.
This doctor and his staff are extremely professional and caring. They truly care about you and your child/family. I never felt rushed out of the room or like my questions and concerns weren't being heard. I was always given 110% of their time and attention. Dr. Kup is a one of a kind doctor!! I would highly recommend this doctor and his staff to anyone I need of a cardiac thoracic surgeon.
I have had the honor and privilege to work with Dr. Kupferschmid for many, many years. He is relentless in patient care and maximization of patient care. He is very focused upon what is best for the patients well-being. Even his vacations involve helping other individuals as he participates in international travel to aid patients that would otherwise not receive medical care. His skills as a surgeon are beyond reproach and his bedside manner is extremely appreciable. Dr. K makes himself available to people on demand and he is sincere, direct and focused upon your overall health. I have personally witnessed him go out of his way to assist others around him well outside of the realm of his practice, simply for the measure of aiding others. He is a true gentleman, a scholar, and the best surgeon in South Texas with regards to cardiovascular surgery.
