My grandfather was treated by Dr. Salo for esophogus cancer. He died less than a year after the surgery. He did not die as a direct result of the cancer but instead he slowly starved to death. My family and I witnessed this horrible ordeal over the last six months of his life. My grandfather was unable to eat or drink anything for the last six months of his life, everything he attempted to eat or drink went straight into his lungs. During the last three months he became nothing but skin and bones due to lack of nutrition, during this time we were told repeatedly that he was not strong enough to endure a routine surgery to insert a feeding tube. A week before my grandfather died he was admitted to another hospital, the doctor at this other hospital successfully implanted the feeding tube, but by the point it was too late, his body was shutting down. He died the next day. I suggest to anyone diagnosed with this form of cancer to weigh all your options before having this type of surgery.

I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Salo to anyone in need of a surgical oncologist. I came to Dr. Salo when a tumor was discovered in the lining of my stomach wall and the two biopsy results came back inconclusive. I was impressed with not only his thoroughness, but with his ability to regurgitate his very technical information into completely understandable verbiage and present it in a form that I was completely comfortable with. When I left his office after my consult, I was armed not only with the typical forms one would receive, but also with his hand drawing of my stomach, where the tumor was, the possibilities of what he could find (in order from best case to worst case and what he suspected it to be). Two days after my surgery Dr. Salo went the extra mile and had additional dye tests done to confirm there was not a leak. I was impressed with the respect Dr. Sale received from the other hospital staff members. They kept me on the machine until Dr. Salo came down and saw… the test results for himself. After he left, I was talking to the technicians and they said he likes to be present for the tests done on his patients.You would be hard pressed to find a smarter, more caring surgeon.
