Dr. Joy A Derwenskus has the following 2 specialties
A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.
Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease.
In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.

Let me start by saying when I had my last appointment with Dr. Derwenskus (didn't know at the time that would be my last appointment) she told me she was leaving Northwestern and moving to another state. I literally teared up and cried. She is awesome and made me feel so comfortable with my MS. She took great care of me. She set the bar for me and now every doctor I've seen, they just don't measure up. If I could afford to fly to her for my routine appointments, I would.
Dr. Derwenskus spent a lot of time getting to know me and my issues. She was very thoughtful and thorough. She also had a great sense of humor which I REALLY appreciated. I was a bit disappointed when I initially made this appointment and was told that the new doctor (Dr. Derwenskus) would be taking care of me. But after meeting her, I am thrilled! As a migraine patient, I sometimes feel marginalized because let's face it, in a neurology office, my issues are relatively minor. However, she made me feel like my issues, although relatively minor, were still important. I highly recommend.
She had the integrity to tell me the truth at a time when I was having none of it (steroids, CSVI, Bee venom, and various crackpot alternative medicine). She also used her position to get me into world renowned rehab RIC a power-wheelchair and get me the best service possible at NWM. If you are new to MS that may not seem like much but in hindsight she made my life much better. Plus she is fun in an argument.
