Dr. June Shushing Chen, MD

First of all forgive me for the image you will see, but is important so you understand better what she did to me, It took me years to be able to tell my story. My experience with Dr Chen was more than “traumatizing” and I’m still working in my recover. I wish I could give a “zero” because she doesn’t deserves not even 1 star. So in 2016 after founding out that I was BRAC1 gen carrier (which meant that I had a really high risk to developing breast cancer). I was devastated with the news, I just moved to Utah and after speaking with different doctors I decided that I wanted my Breast to be removed and go through reconstruction. I found Dr. Chen, went to my consultation and all the plan sounded good. My surgery was going to be in two faces: 1st a breast surgeon would remove all my breast tissue and prepare my breast so 2nd Dr Chen could insert an expander that after two weeks of my surgery, Dr Chen would start injecting a saline solution little by little (every two weeks) so my skin… recovered from the tissue removal trauma and I could go in a second surgery to replace the expander with an implant. The day of the surgery was the most scary and devastated day of my whole life. When I woke after the surgery, I was prepared with the idea of not having volume in my breast but the expander inserted. I was horrified, Dr Chen inserted the expander and fill it up to the max and my skin was totally distress and hurt from so much CC,s. (which was totally the opposite of the plan). My breast was almost in my throat. The same night my breast started to get purple and I was sooooo scared that asked every single personal of the hospital to call Dr. Chen. My skin was dying due to among of pressure on my breast. Dr. Chen never came to see me at the hospital and just told the nurses to use a cream on the purple zone. My bottom right breast die. She didn’t care and I was able to see her after 2 weeks when there was nothing else to do to safe that part of my breast. Dr Chen is a joke, she wanted to get skin from my back and put a flap (a patch) in the site where I got necrosis. Obviously I didn’t trust her anymore so desperately I beg a lot of other doctors to help me and nobody wanted to do nothing for me. However I found an excellent and kind plastic surgeon (my Angel) that was able to help me. He told me that he may needed to remove my nipple too due to the necrosis but thank God he did all to safe my nipple and did a great job to make my breast look better. That wasn’t the end of my journey, I have had 6 surgeries since then to try to fix as much as possible what she did to me. Dr. Chen, removed two large bumps on my cheek and specifically made the incisions so the scars would be in the folds of the skin under my eye and on the cheek. After a month, I can't see the scars. What more could one want from a plastic surgeon?

Dr Chen performed a DIEP breast reconstruction back in 2015. She did an incredible job. I just happened upon this site and was surprised to see how many negative reviews she had. She does have an intimidating vibe to her but I am so glad I looked past that. She really does listen to you. Her knowledge and skills are immeasurable. She is a true miracle worker ??. I went to Dr. June Chen as a referral from a friend for my breast reduction. My in office consultations were short and I left with out all of my questions answered. I felt like Dr. Chen dismissed my questions and concerns and moved on to other things. I specifically requested the anchor method for a reduction and got the key hole instead leaving me with about 4 inch of breast tissue still on my body under my breast. Bras to don't stay in place and the pain of that extra breast tissue is so uncomfortable. Dr. Chen said I would need Lipo to my breast to remove this tissue and that will cost me more. (shouldn't she cover that if she didn't get it all?) I had a bad reaction to the sutures and I am now paying for it with 3 inch wide scares on each breast due to Dr. Chen opening up my incision site to remove the dissolvable sutures. I requested to go from a full J to a full C small D. Today just over three years later I am a very full DD. I wish I would have gotten the size I wanted. I was… also told I would have drains on both sides for a week but in reality I had drains for a month, that have also left a large scare on my right breast that feels like a lump. (Very scary to feel a lump in your breast.) It my just be my body but there is not a day that goes by that my scares do not hurt. I will be going in for consultations with other Physicians for a second reduction. I recommend if you do not get your questions answered do not fall for her pressure to schedule surgery like I did. Even my family member who took me home and cared for me after was not happy with how quickly Dr. Chen dismissed her after surgery care questions. Get another opinion before you pick your surgeon. The staff is great though. Very friendly and really seemed to care about me.

I had major scarring from three different c-sections. Dr Chen was very precise in her exam and followup treatment for my problem. It was a difficult and painful surgery, but Dr. Chen was always available and helpful throughout my recovery. Scarring was minimal and can barely be seen today. I have had several Doctor's who have seen my abdomen since my operation, and they all have said what a good job she did for me. I would highly recommend her as a skilled plastic surgeon.

Spent minimal time with me, especially when unsure about procedure in the first place. She only spent about 10 minutes with me and then she was ready to schedule surgery. I also felt like a bother to her while I was there... did not connect with her at all!

Dr. Chen did not perform my surgery because after one visit with her, I was so discouraged to the point that I almost entirely didn't get the breast reduction I had been wanting for so many years. I found Dr. Chen cold and somewhat impatient. I felt like I was just another patient that she was anxious to get out the door. Furthermore, I stopped asking questions throughout the consultation because she made me feel fairly condescended for asking them and because I felt like she simply did not have time to listen to anything else I had to say. A friend of mine who also had a consultation with Dr. Chen who has undergone many surgeries due to complications with cancer agreed that she felt Dr. Chen to be cold and that she made her feel like she wanted this surgery out of some vain motive and that it couldn't possibly have to do with her health and comfort. Dr. Chen's staff was extremely kind and helpful... however, perhaps they should wait to talk in the hallway about how vain an earlier… patient appeared and her conditions until they are sure that another patient is not waiting (45 minute wait for a 15 minute consultation) within earshot in the room right next door. As far as her practices go, I found it strange that she insisted that every patient, no matter how large or small they were or have become nor how intensive the surgery, must wear the drains for AT LEAST a full week. As many of the other surgeons that I met with would agree, the time a patient should keep drains in is dependent on the patient and the surgery. It is not mandatory or even necessary in absolutely all cases to keep them in for such a long period of time. In fact, many surgeons do not even use drains at all. Regarding the hospital stay, Dr. Chen made it clear that the patient's stay in the hospital would last up until they are ready and safe to be sent home and (except in unexpected circumstances) not overnight. However, I had the feeling that this was again her wanting the patient up and out as soon as possible.

As a plastic surgeon who has experience with breast reconstruction, one would think she would be empathetic and try to put patients at ease. Unfortunately, I found her to be inconsiderate and abrupt. She asked if I had REALLY not had earlier mammograms. Is that really an appropriate or necessary question for someone who had cancer? More importantly, how does that change things NOW? She asked me what I wanted to change, but then proceeded to ask about specific procedures. I explained that I really didn't know all that could be done, but I would be open to her suggestions. She kept going back to asking about other procedures as if I were an expert in plastic surgery. Thankfully, I had seen someone else first who was very understanding and offered input and alternatives, so I knew enough to realize that her proposed procedure would likely accomplish little more than giving me a bigger scar than necessary and not fully address my concern. She told me with the right bra, it would look okay.… Yes, but so would my current condition, so what's the point of going through surgery and recovery? Her receptionist was extremely kind and considerate, but I was very uncomfortable and disappointed with my interaction with Dr. Chen.
