Dr. Karen J. Chang-Chen, MD

1) she talks way too fast and at times uses big words that apparently I was not too intelligent enough to understand because I had to Google everything she told me and call for follow ups to my visits. 2) I was researching some of my symptoms and asked her about them. She said that I didnt have it. Still unsure, I asked again the next couple of visits and finally she agreed to do the needed genetic's test. Apparently, my suspicions were correct and the diagnosis changed my life as I knew it. Even though, I was born with the disorder, I wasnt diagnosed until my early 40s. The disorder is Klinefelter's and finding out that I was born with XXY instead of XY chromosomes was mind blowing and apparently, it led to other diagnosis that explained away other symptoms over the years. 3) I kept asking about Forteo to treat her diagnosis of Osteoporosis (based on the KF diagnosis). Instead, she prescribed Reclast Infusion stating that it would strengthen my bones and require only 2 more… injections. Well, I was injected over 30 mins at the infusion center of the hospital and the nurse monitored my vital signs. I went home feeling weird. The next day, I awoke and unable to get out of bed. My roommate helped me up and I could barely stand. I felt like I got hit by a Freight Truck! I was rushed to ER where I fainted upon standing. My body felt painful to the touch. At the ER, my Temp was 103; my BP was 195/110; my Heart Rate was 150, and my EKG was all over the place. They had to administer IV fluids and 3 rounds of Morphine. Eventually, I was feeling better but the ER doctor diagnosed as a severe reaction to the Reclast. The only side effect that Dr. Chang-Chen advised me of, was that I should not have any dental treatment for the first 6-months because the slightest vibration could cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. After a couple days of bed rest, I contacted the doctor. She said that I sounded upset--really?? When I asked why she did not mention any of these possible side effects that I later discovered is known to occur and because she knew that I am very sensitive to new medications. She stated, "Well, I probably should have said something but I just figured that you would have Googled it first since you were right about the KF disorder. I never returned to this doctor.

Dr. Chang-Chen cares a lot about her patients & is very personable. She always checked up on me. Thanks to her my diabetes is getting under control. Thanks Steve K. in Philly
