Dr. Karl R. Bernat

Dr. Bernat had made up his mind about my case before he even met me. He was not willing to listen to my concerns and only did testing after I insisted. I have a complicated health history but he was not interested in anything I had to say about my history. I thought the first rule of doctors was to do no harm but by the time I left I was angry and hurt and harmed. I was totally surprised by his attitude since I have seen many doctors in my life and have never been treated like this before.

He listens to me. We may not always be on the same page but he will listen. If needed he will refer to a specialist. His staff who work with him are pleasant and will answer questions they are able to or refer you to Dr. Bernat. He doesn't rush to finish the appointment and will answer questions. Direct but professional. Won't say what you want to hear to make you feel better. Responds to online messages. Won't change from him.

He has no respect for patients' intelligence, and this isn't the guy for routine pelvic exams: he used a speculum sized for a horse on me, who never gave birth. Ouch. For days. He also was ignorant of the DPT vaccine giving some protection against pneumonia, common anomalies of the thyroid (pyramidal lobe), and sent me to a podiatrist when I needed an orthopedic surgeon. And ignorant and surly staff members get his support, instead of guidance. Keep well clear of him, and Duke Primary Care on Sandy Forks Road.

Spent a lot of time getting a very thorough history; never felt rushed; most time I have spent with a PCP in years. Great bedside manner. Was feeling overwhelmed with having my infant who was upset with me- he was great with her and made me feel very comfortable as a parent in a stressful situation.

Dr. Bernat's lack of any bedside manner, cold demeanor, lack of focus on me as a patient, inability to think outside of the box, headstrong and unable to consider other physician's philosophies or methods. In short, I will not be seeking medical care from this physician.

Dr. Bernat has been my doctor for several years now and I am very happy with his medical care of me. I feel he shows genuine interest in my well being and I never feel like he is rushing through our appointment just to get to the next patient. I would give him high marks!
