Hand Happy Patient

I had two operations on my hand by another hand specialist with poor results. I finally decided to go to Dr Osterman. He did revision surgery to correct the problems and I have full use of my hand back. The other surgeon said it was as good as it could be. My surgery ran about 1 1/2 hours longer than he thought, and that is one of the reasons you have to wait for him. He does the more complicated cases which other surgeons don't want to do. If his surgeries run late, then it backs up the entire for him. He will also spend as much time with you as needed, and answer all of your questions and not rush the appointment. There is good reason he runs late and I in this case I respect it. He gave me full use of my hand back.

The Best Hand Surgeon in the world

He is the best with his knowledge on the subject and complex surgery options. Still he is down to earth and spends enough time with the patent. Wait time is more than 2 hours at time, but every hour is worth waiting for him.

the best of the best

I am a healthy 65 yr old with hand issues. Without a doubt there are not enough stars for Dr. Osterman. His outstanding work was backed up by more than 2 highly enthusiastic recommendations prior to my first visit. On top of true technical genius he is a patient, calm and just plain awesome human. You may have to wait a few hours to see him but he is worth it and i don't believe i could say that about anyone else.

Supposedly great doctor, horrible bed side manner

I have heard nothing but fabulous things about him. I went to him and had surgery by him. I had to have wrist reconstruction where my wrist had to be broken. I was told that I would be back to work in no time. The surgery was more complicated than expected with an Ulnar tear, as well. My beef is, I was not prepared by Osterman. Everyone else told me it would take forever to heal. He told me 6 months. Today, 2.5 months after surgery he told me it would take a year. A year! Why did he not tell me that sooner? My rheumatologist, pain specialist, etc told me it would take a year, but Osterman just got around to telling me. He doesn't have a good bedside manner. He's cold, factual and doesn't have a pulse. Everything is very matter of fact and he gets around to telling you...whenever. It's like a free for all. I have Lupus and other conditions. He has not taken any of that into account. Today he told me that I may need to have surgery "again" to take out the plate and pins. Well, I can't do that. My lupus has acted up and I am quite sick from the surgery. Again, why was I not told this might need to happen and why am I told like it's nothing? The initial surgery was over 3 hours long. I also have Sjogrens Syndrome. When I tried to explain this to him, he laughed and said, "You are healthy! You will feel better once the sun comes out." What?? No, I am not healthy and the sun makes Lupus worse! I am on SSD due to chronic illness. I want someone who listens and cares. This guy doesn't. The wait to see him in the office is insane. Prepare for 2-3 hour waits. I always know to go, check in and then go get lunch and come back. Know that you have to make a day of it. Know he will spend maybe 10 minutes with you...and that's it. I want to like him because of how "great" everyone says he is, but I don't. I want a doctor to know the whole person, not just my wrist and take my overall condition into account and let me know straight up what to expect. I am out of work now for a full year (was not expected) and if I do decide to have this surgery of taking the plate and pins out, I will have to be in a splint for another 6 weeks. This is crazy and he acted like it was no big deal. It's a big deal. This is my life, my job is at risk and my health is, too. Very disappointed.
