Dr. Leo Maria Maher JR., MD

First of all, the receptionist never smiles and never acknowledges when you walk in. Even when I try and smile, she just looks at you like you're crazy or something. Then we you see the doctor, he has a chip on his shoulder and has this crazy laugh or nervous laugh or something. He constantly talks bad about my 2 other physician and that he is the only MS specialist in Hawaii. The other thing about this office is that the receptionist, Jeri, never answers the phone!!! Poor customer service!

Excellent, professional, great with answers to questions and explaining things. If I do have to wait longer than anticipated in the waiting room, I know he's spending as much time as needed for whomever he is helping and will do the same with me, if necessary. I don't judge this particular doctor on the basis of "wait time". I prefer compassion, professionalism and real attention to my medical issues. I went to several other doctors before finding him and have now been with him steadily as a patient.

We're lucky to have Dr Maher in Hawaii. Knowledgeable, listens&hears medical issues, doesn't order useless tests, he's open to patient's ideas re care, esp. for long-term, chronic medical issues. Office staff is The Best.

A VERY kind, considerate Doc!!

*Easy to make appts, but the later in the day, the more likely he will be running. Pretty much the same for most Drs. *Usually not prompt, as he spends time with each patient. *I was already diagnosed with MS *Has a dry sense of humor. I get along great with him no problem. *Spends more than 15min with each patient. Usually 30-45 min per appt. At least I don't feel rushed out of his office. *If follow-up is needed, his nurse usually does it. That's fine with me. Dr Maher is very active in the community. I see him often at MS meetings in the evening, so he is very active. He's very knowledgeable in the area of Multiple Sclerosis.

While he is personable and knowledgeable about drugs, that's where his expertise stops. He misdiagnosed a serious - potentially deadly - infection as a neurological problem and treated with steroids that cause the infection to get worse and worse. The end result is I was hospitalized for weeks, before another doctor made a correct diagnosis and treated me with antibiotics. Maher would not admit the misdiagnosis.

Awesome Caring Doctor

Visited twice now. First time I had to reschedule, it took so long (1hr+). Then The second time I got in to see him after an hour 20m wait. Every other aspect of my visit was average, at best.

What an overblown ego on this guy! Thinks he's God's gift. I would give him minus stars if I could. Go elsewhere.
