- Internal Medicine
An internist is a physician who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the adult population—both acute and chronic.
These doctors are often who adults see as their primary physicians because they treat a broad range of illnesses that do not require surgical or specialist interventions. They also work to help a patient maintain optimal health in order to prevent the onset of disease.
In addition to treating the common cold and flu, internists also treat chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
- Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
An endocrinologist is a physician with extensive training in understanding, diagnosing and treating conditions related to the endocrine system. The endocrine system regulates the balance of hormones.
Conditions of the endocrine system involve an over-abundance, or deficiency of a certain hormone. While there is a range when it comes to the amount of a hormone that is deemed normal in a human, these specialists determine whether a person's amount of hormone is indicative of a health concern. Two conditions this specialist might treat are diabetes and obesity.

Dr. Shapiro always seems to be in a hurry. I explained my symptoms after she changed my dosage of thyroid med. She blamed my hypothyroid symptoms on a lack of sleep. Furthermore, when I called to get the results of my blood test, the woman gave me the information in a rude fashion and hung up on me. Don't go there.
I saw Dr. Shapiro before and after her extended medical leave. Things were pretty hectic at the office during her leave but have settled down since. I have never experienced any of the issues mentioned in the reviews here. I have never waited longer than 10 minutes before being taken back to see the doctor. Staff have been nice and welcoming and efficient. I often call last minute and get an appointment within a few days, sometimes the next day. Maybe it has to do with being a regular patient or a new patient. I don't know. -Have been seeing her for about 2 years now.
Very abrupt and actually walked out on me while I was still talking to her during my follow up visit. Our entire discussion lasted less than 3 minutes, I think, and I was very disappointed that she didn't take the time to allow me to ask her any of the things I'd been waiting several months to talk to her about. The one thing she found during my initial visit had little to do with why I went to her in the first place. I came away very disappointed and still don't have any answers. It is rare for me to have health issues or to feel bad so my going to her was for a good reason. If you're looking for a doctor to discuss and analyze your symptoms or offer alternative solutions, keep on walking, she's not the one for you. I will not go back to her nor can I recommend her for anything other than a very basic blood exam.
