He steered me over to stem cell transplant, when there wasn't much hope. His picture, along with my other doctors at MDA, I keep on my pc desktop.

On the one hand he is competent, can be very nice and with my initial visit spent a lot of time with me. He does need pushed for the "why" answers - why are you recommending this treatment, why not that treatment, why didn't you even mention this choiceâ?¦ He is on the board that makes the "gold standard" treatment recommendations so keeps up. However when you are in there for a checkup and are basically still in remission he is in a rush to get in and then out of there. My most recent visit he blew in and out in less than 5 minutes. I had some questions and he did stop while I asked them, but because they were about the negative side of the cancer he needed pushed to answer them. He tends to be upbeat and downplays the negative. Good if you want that, not so good if you want to discuss that aspect of a cancer that has no cure. He tends more to treat the disease and not the whole person - not that he is mean or anything - he isn't, rather he doesn't do well with the emotional needs… of the patient connected with the disease, especially if they are in the anger phase, and would prefer, I think, not to have to deal with that. My mother would be thrilled with him - he would tell her what to do without ambiguity, be upbeat, and squash fears with optimism. As he is very competent she would have 100% trust that his treatment decisions would be the right ones. I deal with stress with information and discussion, want to know both the upbeat and the not so good. He is not as good a match for that. He is willing to work with out of town oncologists which is nice so that you can go there, have them "direct traffic" so to speak and get your treatment elsewhere. He does return their phone calls.
