A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.
Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease.
In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.

I saw Dr Gudesblatt 4 times over a period of a year plus. he sent me for a number of tests but never really reviewed the results. At 3 appts one of my parents attended. All he did during our appts is talk about himself and how was in essence smarter than other physicians as he was able to determine that I have dysautonomia... At one appt he said I had not done blood test despite my mother and I explaining that I had... rather than call someone he kept saying I did not do these tests when we were leaving we stopped at the front desk and confirmed that he had in fact received the results... No apology from him that he made a mistake.. At my final appt in which he had promised to have a tx plan he again spoke about himself. my dad said that I have really been struggling with dizziness on his way out of the office he laughingly said to eat fries and chips to increase my salt. At checkout I was informed that I would see a Nurse practioner in 6 months and to see a someone to help with my memory. I was upset with the lack of tx plan or explanation of tests. I called and when Dr Gutesblatt finally returned my call. He became upset when I told him that he was not informative he threatened to ang up on me 2 times.... How unprofeesionall
i was ready to go to sleep forever after other drs left me to suffer alone, dr G is a GENIUS.. There is not a better neurologist on long island anywhere, i flew to other states for help i was left to suffer and slowly fall apart until i found Dr G.. best there is
