Summary
I was born in California but lived all over the U.S. and in Italy while growing up. After graduating from Dartmouth, I took a masters degree at Cornell before starting medical school at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois. From there, I went on to do my residency in Internal Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In July 1985, I joined The Permanente Medical Group. I am board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and continue ongoing medical education in order to keep current in my field.
In 1996 I helped establish the Department of Hospital Medicine at Vallejo Medical Center and was the department's first chief. Hospital Medicine is a relatively new field of Internal Medicine that is focused on the medical care of the hospitalized patient. My day is spent entirely in the hospital working through patients' complex medical issues and trying to inform and assist families in dealing with those problems.
A special interest of mine is …pneumonia. I am the Clinical Leader and author of the Kaiser Permanente Clinical Practice Guideline for pneumonia and am currently engaged in clinical research on that disease.
I have two boys in high school and that has taught me to expect anything! My idea of a good time is riding my bike up Mount Diablo- and also enjoy cooking, reading, all kinds of music, and gardening with native California plants.

Our provider data is gathered directly from physicians and publicly available databases. Providers who verify their profiles gain the ability to update information, offering additional details about their specialties, education, treated conditions, performed procedures, and accepted insurances.
Reviews on Vitals are submitted by users only. Recognizing the valuable insights these reviews offer into a doctor's reputation, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Importantly, providers cannot delete or alter reviews independently. Reviews can only be deleted or changed following an internal assessment by our customer service team.
