Dr. Marquis Hart joined Balboa Nephrology Medical Group in 2020. He is a board-certified surgeon with over 30 years of experience in the medical field. He is a specialist in transplant, hepatobiliary and general surgery.

Dr. Hart received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stanford University, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After finishing his surgical residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, he completed his fellowship training in general surgery and liver transplantation at Rush Presbyterian Medical Center. In 1993, Dr. Hart established the liver transplant program at the University of California San Diego and served as the director of the abdominal transplant programs. Dr. Hart developed the liver transplant program at Swedish Medical Center and served as the director of transplant programs until 2019.

I was a member of the Abdominal Organ Transplant team at UCSD in San Diego in 2008 and Dr. Hart was one of my collaborating physicians. I found him to be an excellent teacher as I acquired a skill set and necessary medical knowledge in caring for pre and post liver, pancreas and kidney transplant patients. For any patient to rank a physician of Dr. Hart's caliber below a 4/5 scale suggests that their expectations weren't in line with their medical and psychological health realities. As I worked with Dr. Hart and observed his attitudes and interactions with patients I saw a physician who cared about his patients' needs and made every attempt to educate them about options and what to expect with each option. Dr. Hart is one of the most skilled surgeons I have worked with in my nearly 40 years in health care.

Dr Hart was my liver specialist 11 years ago in San Diego, CA. In 2006 I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that metastasized to my liver. I was told I would need a liver specialist. In 2007 after multiple surgeries and chemo treatments to shrink the cancer I found out I needed to have half my liver removed. Dr hart was so helpful, informative about what needed to happen. It was a successful operation, my liver has regenerated, I have had no complications. I am cancer free for 12 years now and so thankful for the team of Doctors that have cared for me over the years. .

Dr. Hart is a doctor and surgeon extraordinaire, and what stands out is his confidence in being able to solve a medical problem and his incredible warmth and compassion. I feel that Swedish is incredibly lucky to have him. Dr. Hart is a wonderful human being, and he goes above and beyond to connect with his patients emotionally. I consider myself very lucky person to have received his gifts of hope and healing.

I am spiritually supporting a teenage girl and her Spanish speaking family. I rate Dr. Hart the absolute best communicator this young woman could've had at exactly the right time in her medical situation. He is a real 'servant' (his word) to this patient and her family.
