An addiction medicine specialist is a doctor who treats patients with addictions to substances like drugs and alcohol or, in some cases, behaviors like gambling. Many of these specialists also treat the diseases that stem from these addictions.
These physicians are specially trained to prevent and treat the disease of addiction via psychiatric means, or other fields of medicine like family or internal medicine.
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.<br>He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.

The absolute most positive experience I have ever had with a Psychiatrist if not any and all Doctors. I have had very little hope that I might again live at any quality measure of function after my back injury then failed back surgery. I could barely sit let alone stand without being either in constant pain or sick from withdrawal. Needless to say, my mood suffered immensely. I was on a cocktail of medications including fentanyl which barely helped but somehow had become the only thing in the world that mattered to me. This was until I was told it could no longer be prescribed. My life was effectively over until I went to see Dr. Sloane. Her incredible patience and expertise in treating all at once my chronic pain, opiate dependence, trauma, and depression along with her own wealth of hope to spare and share...Dr. Sloane saved my life. She is a treasure. Thank you Dr. Sloane.

This lady, i use the term doctor loosey, was disinterested in talking to me as a person or patient. or about my problem. i have suffered from ptsd and various additions over the years and dr sloane offered me no coping skill at all. we never talked about the science of nerurso plasticity snd how alcohol rewires the brain and distorts what make you feel good. and takes a great deal of healing. her mantras 'you're born this way, nothing you can do about it.' which i firmly disagree with. the final straw that broke the csmel's back was when i tried to leave a session early to attend to my son. she said 'you can't leave, you haven't pad me yet.' a new s-LOW-ane for me.
