Dr. Melissa Macy Montgomery, MD

There comes a time in a man's life that even if he's healthy, eventually he is going to have to see a urologist. Although many men are uncomfortable talking about prostate health, it's something they should eventually get checked, especially once they reach their mid 40's or if they have a family history of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the only way to physically perform a prostate check is a digital exam right up the old backside. And I can tell you right now that I was certainly not looking forward to it. Thank goodness for a friend's recommendation to see Dr. Montgomery. Dr. Montgomery is board certified in urologic surgery and sees both male and female patients of all ages. She works out of Ochsner Hospital and her staff almost never runs behind (no pun intended) schedule. In fact, once I check in with the receptionist, I almost always get called to the back at the exact time my appointment is scheduled for. Once in the back, an always friendly nurse gathers my… vitals and puts me in my assigned room; and Dr. Montgomery is usually shows up a few minutes later. Dr. Montgomery is very personable and I have never felt rushed while I was seeing her. She is very attentive and takes her time to thoroughly answer any and all questions that you may have. The actual physical examination is done with dignity and there is no need to even don a gown. Furthermore, it is done relatively quickly and with minimal discomfort. And if you ever have to have any blood work done, she is quick to get your results back. Another plus that I enjoy is that she actively monitors her emails via the "My Ochsner" portal and answers them in a very timely fashion. In fact, she answers so timely, that it is a little like getting a "house call". As stated before, Dr. Montgomery sees both male and female patients. So all you guys out there who have a history of prostate cancer in your family, or are at the age where you should get an annual prostate exam, stop procrastinating and get it done. I can absolutely recommend Dr. Montgomery and urge you not to be shy about seeing a female urologist. Her skills and demeanor are second to none, she follows up on all her calls & emails and gets you any lab results in very timely manner. Lastly, and also very noteworthy is that she has very small fingers. And that my friends is very important! But seriously, take care of yourselves and be proactive about your health.

After 2 years of being misdiagnosed by to other doctors who were convinced what I had was repetitive prostate infection. I finally decided to try my luck with a female doctor and based on her reviews decided to go with DR. Montgomery. Thank god for that decision. In just one visit Dr. Montgomery was able to get to the root of what was causing my intolerable testicular pain and discomfort. Turns out all along was living with an inguinal hernia my 2 prior doctors had missed. Even as doctors were all human and are entitled to make mistakes. But am glad choosing Dr .Montgomery prevented me as a patient from making another one.

Dr. Montgomery was very friendly and patient in answering my questions. She clearly demonstrates a compassionate nature and made me feel she really cares about her patients. She demonstrated her integrity by only ordering tests that are absolutely necessary, clearly explaining her diagnostic plans. I was so relieved to have found such a kind-spirited doctor in this specialty!

This is primarily for those men who may be hesitant to see a female urologist. I am an almost 43-year-old male who was experiencing testicular/back pain approximately one year post vasectomy and who had never had a prostate/testicular exam prior to my visit. Following a referral to Ochsners urology group, a consideration of Dr. Montgomerys background and clinical interests, together with my own experience of having seen 2 male urologists over the years, suggested that it would be worth putting aside my anxiety in favor of establishing a doctor-patient relationship in an area of medicine that will become increasingly more important to me in the coming years. My observations are these: First, despite Ochsner being such a busy place, everything ran on time and was extremely efficient. Dr. Montgomerys staff was very pleasant. I answered a few basic questions regarding medical history, etc., and then blood pressure and pulse were taken. Dr. Montgomery came in very shortly… thereafter. Her demeanor was calming and not at all unapproachable. I found her to be attentive, to offer understandable explanations to my questions. My impression overall was that she would (and did) take whatever time was necessary to make sure that all my questions and concerns were addressed. The actual physical examination part of the visit was performed in a dignified way (I was not made to wait on a table in a gown) and was actually over very quickly and with virtually no discomfort. Privacy was well respected. There were two tests that I had done, the results of which were provided to me within three hours of my visit, one of which Dr. Montgomery took the time to verify personally. It probably goes without saying that most men do not look forward to a trip to the doctor (and urologists in particular), but it is worth saying that I had a very positive experience and I do highly recommend Dr. Montgomery, particularly to other men with any hesitation about seeing a female urologist.
