Dr. Melvin Chungwah Wong, MD

Dr. Melvin Wong saved my life. Previously, I was misdiagnosed as having moyamoya, and I had undergone surgery at Stanford Hospital by Dr. Gary Steinberg. After the surgery I completely decompensated. my blood pressure skyrocketed to the 200s, and I almost died in my apartment. Unfortunately, Dr. Gary Steinberg had no idea what was going on, and could care less; he abandoned me as a patient. Th next 8 months were a terrifying stream of events involving multiple admissions to the hospital, failure of my bypass by Dr. Steinberg, and 23 ambulance rides. I was in and out of the emergency room and nobody could help me. I was seen by several Queen's Medical Center neurologists an neurosurgeons who either misdiagnosed me or failed to recognize the severity of my diagnosis. When I first came to Dr. Wong and told him I had moyamoya, he was very skeptical. This is because Dr. Gary Steinberg did not perform a proper workup, and he has seen several poor results of Dr. Steinberg. Dr. Wong… immediately performed several tests and imaging studies. At this point, we learned that I had a very rare disease called 'cerebral vasculitis.' It affects 2 out of every million people and has a 17-20% death rate. Dr. Wong immediately consulted Dr. Alan Oki, rheumatologist, and they started me on high-dose steroids as well as other immunosuppressant medications. I gradually started getting better and my TIAs(mini-strokes) disappeared; my blood pressures which were vacillating and completely out-of-control started to normalize; I started feeling much better and over the course of 6 months I began to feel normal again. I highly recommend Dr. Melvin Wong if you are experiencing any type of cerebrovascular disease, strokes, etc.. He trained at Cleveland clinic which is the second best hospital in the nation. although his staff can be frustrating at times, he is worth the wait, and is extremely thorough. He does not leave any stone unturned. I highly recommend him as a stroke and cerebrovascular specialty neurologist.

Dr. Taniguchi referred me to Dr. Wong. I have Moya Moya and am GLAD to be ALIVE. Surgery in North Carolina with Dr. Fukushima. Hands down the best surgeon. After the surgery NO MORE MIGRAINES! Headaches I can deal with, but YEAY for NO migraines!!!! Dr. Wong is thorough. He knows his stuff!!!

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! First of all I had a very difficult case. I had multiple neurological and autoimmune problems and Dr. Wong took his time to make sure the diagnosis was correct. I was misdiagnosed by a couple of other doctors, but Dr. Wong knew what it was. My bloodwork was sent to Mayo on the mainland and other clinics as well. He really cares about his patients and even is worried what would happen to his patients when he retires! That's commitment! You may have to wait a long time in the waiting room, but I'm okay with that. Why? Because when it is my turn...he doesn't rush. He is very caring and thorough and I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate him for everything he has done for me.

Staff is rude and unprofessional, should take a class to customer service or hire new ones.

Dr Wong including his 2 MAs & his wife are so outstanding, respectful, professional, knowledgable & works very hard to make sure I'm taken care of. When I see a doctors office that is so full of patients, this makes me know inside that I've arrived to a known & important Doctor! Waiting is no problem for me because when it's my turn, Dr Wong spends adequate time with me; answering all my questions, giving me options & also he makes sure everything he ordered is correct & adequate. If he has his doubts he'll even call the Radiologist to talk to them. I've been seeing dr Wong for over 10 years, my siblings & friends also see him. I strongly erge patients that are seeking a neurologist to please see him. Dr Wong has found answers to a lot of my unsolved questions. Without him maybe I wouldn't be here today. Dr Wong is the best neurologist on Oahu. And his staff now just makes everything else fall into place....

I'm very happy with Dr. Wong. He is very attentive and caring doctor. Doctor Wong is very honest, if he doesn't have an answer to my medical problem he will find the answer. The only problem is his staff, not good listener, confirmation with testing all the time.

His office staff needs a lot of work, they are pretty defiant at times towards him and it is seen clearly in front of patient, no professionalism. Although, Dr. Wong can be demanding at times they need to handle the situation much better. It's too bad he has this staff.Dr. Wong is very very comprehensive. I had tons of blood test done and other comprehensive test done that no other neurologist would ever do. He's the only one who educated me and found things that other neurologist never even thought of. He's always been professional with me and his beside manners has been ok, at least better what I heard.
