- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.

If I could give Dr. Greenbaum zero stars, I would. I saw him from the time I was 9-15 (2000-2014.) During this time, I was given lithobid for what he had diagnosed as "bipolar disorder with hallucinations." I was also put on a prescription to help me sleep and he tried at least ten different anti-depressants on me when I wasn't yet docile enough for him. I wasn't allowed to leave if I didn't give him a drawing or say at least a word to him because I didn't like talking to him; often times this was because lithobid made me feel like a zombie. In reality, I did not have bipolar disorder. I did not have hallucinations. I had been diagnosed with Autism when I was very little yet every doctor had brushed over that diagnosis saying, "Yea, right, she doesn't have Autism." I simply needed an NSRI (which was the one thing he managed to do right) to help my brain sort itself out. I take the sleeping pill he put me on, but at a much lower dosage. I simply had "hallucinations" because I never knew what real sleep was. Dr. Greenbaum never got me tested when he had heard I was diagnosed with something like Autism to see if that was truly the problem. He put a diagnosis that was similar, and shared many of the same symptoms, and gave me medication - medication that had I taken it longer would have started to destroy my kidneys - to try and make a quick fix. Our next appointments were but 5 minutes long, just enough to refill prescriptions, and we were out of the door. Do you want a psychiatrist for your child that will look into his/her history and be thorough or do you want one that will slap any ol' disorder onto her and prescribe potentially damaging drugs? Do yourself and your children a favor, find a psychiatrist that *cares* about your children. Don't come here.
Took my daughter to Dr. Greenbaum for ADHD. Office is always busy and appointments were short in my opinion. Talk therapy staff assigned never really connected with my daughter. Situation with my daughter was difficult, and I am not sure anything that was done through these people really helped. Basic complaint is that I thought my daughter and I were just another coin dropping through their machine.
Im 24. Saw him when I was 9 years old. My mother being a worried parent heard of how highly he was reviewed at the time. Can honestly say he was the start of my life going downhill. He gave me a high dose of rydlyn, which basically is synthetic speed (amphetamine) My mother kept calling him stating that "I'm not sitting still, and I have to much energy" Go figure.... So he tells her multiple times to give him (me) another pill, and another. I was so geeked out on Rydlyn i had no idea what was going on, and had intense anxiety which let me to be hospitalized in a psychiatric unit nearby. He has done this to dozens of his patients experimenting to see what one drug will do, and he will then label it another diagnoses to excuse himself. At the time it was 1999 when the kid market for drugs was new and open for business. I still hear stories of this same thing happening. It happened to my sisters friend back then with him, and another person I have known. I was 9 and had no say so in what treatment was given to me and I could not really speak for myself. He definitely traumatized me.
He misdiagnosed my kid even when the therapist she was working with weekly discussed the new diagnosis. He would not listen. The new meds are great and have stabilized her. It took inpatient hospitalization to get a new doctor. Dr. Greenbaum pushed ADHD meds at high dosages. I would not recommend him.
