I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in March of 2016 during a colonosopy. I had symptoms for bleeding off and on for about a year. I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. I have radiation and oral chemo and then was due to have my surgery in July. I was told that i was going to have a temporary bag and decided at that time to get a second opinion . I met with Dr. Hopkins in June and spoke to him about my concerns. He was very sensitive to all of my questions. I never felt rushed. He performed an exam and thought that the cancer was high in the rectum, so that the there may be no need for the temporary bag. I decided to schedule my surgery with Dr. Hopkins. I had my surgery in July. Dr. Hopkins was able to complete the surgery without the bag. I then completed 4 months of oral chemo. I just had a ct scan with the dye in March 2017 and i am cancer free. I am so thankful to have had such a skilled surgeon. I would recommend Dr. Hopkins to anyone going though colon or rectal cancer. I will be forever grateful!
He made it clear that his time is far more valuable than the patients' time. He never gives a complete answer, always leaving some important (to the patient) details out, and he never explains the possibility of something going wrong. When he is asked about those possibilities he will divert the conversation to his "plans". He did not discuss pathology data that would change the patients' decision regarding surgery, later claiming never to have seen this data, even though it was available to him nine days before surgery. He determined in the patients' records what procedure he would perform before even discussing it with the patient, and did not change it even after the patient clearly declined, instead encouraging the patient at every opportunity to acquiesce to his recommendation. He felt no obligation to help the patient discover prior on going incorrect treatments at the time he was evaluating and treating the patients' condition. He does not understand what honesty is, has no respect for the patient or the patients' opinion. He has forgotten he is a doctor first, not just a surgeon. The patient spent 5 hours prior to surgery trying to stop the procedure, but he never came to see the patient. To Mr. Linkous-Long, I am so glad things turned out so well for you, but if he is so proficient, why would he leave a patient with a punctured (by him) rectal stump and NEVER mention the increased danger for CRC that he left the patient in , instead alluding to the fact that treatment was complete? Not a word about any necessary further needs, requirements, or treatments, instead insisting "once the colon is gone the danger and problems are gone"? His words not mine.
Dr. Hopkins is THE BEST Colon Rectal Surgeons in the country!!... I put my life in his hands and couldn't be happier. I was a pioneer of The Pull Through back in 1980. It didn't work because of developing other health issues. I had a permanent Ileostomy put in 1987 but they left the rectum and small bowel in case I wanted to be reconnected again. I didn't know that leftovers would put me #1 candidate for CRC until my father died of it in 2009. In 2011 I was looking but no Surgeon would touch me with a 10' pole. Dr Hopkins took the task on and WOW!!.. What a beautiful job he did!!.. I'm now a Pucker Butt and living life to the fullest. My Ileostomy and all!!
