Dr. Mortimer Poncz, MD

Dr. Poncz is an excellent hematologist.

I met Dr. Poncz nine years ago when my daughter was diagnosed with Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). My family and I reside in Philadelphia but were away in New England at the time visiting relatives when my two-year-old daughter was admitted to Baystate Hospital through its ER because of excessive spontaneous bleeding due to extremely low platelet count. As soon as she was diagnosed we contacted Dr. Poncz, Chief of the Division of Hematology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia because of his expertise in blood disorders. Under his leadership, he advocated for our daughters' health on our behalf. He gave me his direct phone number to contact him with daily updates and any concerns. He and two of his colleagues at CHOP did several teleconferences during a seven day period to provide medical advice to the hematologist at Baystate Hospital in Holyoke who had not treated a case like this in a toddler. The excessive bleeding, bruising and pinpoint sized spots… throughout her body was alarming to my wife and me. It was Dr. Poncz who along with two other CHOP Hematologists devised the best treatment plan for our daughter during her week-long hospital stay at Baystate. Once back in Philadelphia Dr. Poncz personally monitored her platelet count as a CHOP outpatient once our daughter’s platelet count increased and she was discharged from Baystate hospital. We are extremely grateful for his sage advice throughout the ordeal and the quality of care, compassion, and professionalism he afforded us and our daughter. Dr. Poncz is an excellent physician and we highly recommend him if your child is in need of medical care.

Twenty-five years ago (when I was five) my parents reached out to Dr. Poncz because he is a recognized expert in the field. He has provided me personal, individualized attention ever since, and truly cares. I have a rare blood disorder, and have seen local hematologist, and not one of them holds a candle to Dr. Poncz. His level of knowledge, and dedication to his patients is unmatched. In my long and varied experience with medical professionals, he is the best and I have been fortunate to have some very fine doctors. Due to complications of my blood disorder, and other health issues I have seen physicians in different fields, and Dr. Poncz is always willing to listen and collaborate which is helpful and not always standard practice. Dr. Poncz has fought for me as a patient when I needed surgery, and assembled a phenomenal team. Dr. Poncz is my first call (or email) if I could take certain medications or have a question, and he always provides an answer promptly. He is invested in more… than me a patient with a blood disorder; he cares about me a whole person. Dr. Poncz assembled a get together for those with my rare blood disorder, so he could educate all of us. He did this on his own time, for our (the patients and their families) benefit. Dr. Poncz has made my medical odyssey much more bearable. I don’t think I can eloquently express what a life saver and advocate Dr. Poncz has been.

Dr. Mortimer Poncz is my son's hematologist. My son has been seeing Dr. Poncz for the past 14 years. My son has an extremely rare platelet disorder. Dr. Poncz has collaborated with physicians from around the world to help give our family answers and hopefully one day -a treatment for my son's rare platelet disorder. He is very approachable and makes himself available outside of office visits via phone and or email. We are lucky to have him on our team.

I have been a patient of Dr. Poncz for over three decades along with a number of my family members. Our entire family has developed a very high degree of trust in Dr. Poncz over this time. He has always been extremely honest, direct and had our best interests in mind. In addition, he is very accessible to patients which is indicative of how much he cares. More than two years ago my child was struggling with health problems. Dr. Poncz was willing to go the extra mile for my child. He was happy to sacrifice his time for me and listen to my questions/concerns about my child. He advised me on how to find the best way to provide the care my child needed. His insights showed that he was clearly an experienced professional and he provided suggestions with the upmost sincerity. I followed up on his advice and my child got the diagnosis and treatment she direly needed. Dr. Poncz showed me clear respect and expressed genuine care for the child's best interest. The time showed his advise was very accurate and he was right about seriousness of the matter and the actions that needed to be taken. My son is now 14 years old, if it weren’t for Dr. Poncz, my son would not have lived past 4 years old when he had his first severe bleeding event due to his rare bleeding disorder. Four years later, my son had another life-threatening event and Dr. Poncz and his team saved my son’s life again. When my son was an infant we were going to numerous hematologist in our area (Central NJ) and by the time my son was 10 months old we found Dr. Poncz. Where other hematologist in NJ told me they didn’t know what was wrong with our son, Dr. Poncz gave us something to hold on to and also educated us as parents of a child with a bleeding disorder. When my son had his first life-threatening episode, I will never forget how Dr. Poncz came to us and kept checking in on us. Through the years he has been available at any time. He always made himself available, and he was always incredibly prompt to respond – phone call, email – he always gets back to us almost immediately. Through the past… 14 years Dr. Poncz guided a scared mother who felt hopeless in the beginning, he educated me over these years on my son’s condition and patiently answered all my many questions and relieved many of my fears. Furthermore and most importantly one of the best things he ever did was advise us to not allow our son to define himself by his bleeding disorder. Our son has been through A LOT. People would never suspect he has such a serious condition. Dr. Poncz equipped us to raise a confident young man who rises above his condition.

I am in no way exaggerate when I say he has saved my life on multiple occasions. I was diagnosed with a very rare bleeding disorder called glannzmann's thrombastenia thrombastenia. When no one else could figure out why I was bleeding profusely he managed to connect the dots and allow me to receive proper care. Throughout the years there have been multiple times when Dr.Poncz has been available to me and my family any time I had a medical emergency. There were multiple occasions when they would have chosen a seriously deadly course of action due to simply not knowing any better in regards to my bleeding disorder. He was ALWAYS available to me even in the middle of the night on vacation to speak to my physicians and make sure they gave proper treatment. One of two especially significant events happened when I had to get heart surgery at CHOP. They were doing a cardiac Cath and once the catheter was removed I bled heavily. Dr.Poncz held pressure on the area BY HAND for almost an… hour until he was sure the bleeding had stopped. He was constantly involved in my care and would personally check on me and my family while I was there. Another comes when I lived in Korea with my mother who was military. I had a nosebleeds and an orderly or a new guy placed a rhino rocket in my nose woth my deviated septum and effectively ripped my nose. The ENT was not in the country and we had to be transferred to an off post Korean medical center. Dr.Poncz helped them keep me stable while they located extremely rare B- blood (in korea) which took about 3 days. I was extremely anemic but due to his intervention and advice I pulled through. I could never truly explain how invaluable his involvement in my life has been. Without him being so available to me and my family throughout the years (I'm 26 not much was known about my disorder 20 years ago) I don't think I would have lived a normal life. Honestly I don't think I would have had a life at all. Thank you Dr.P

Dr. Mortimer Poncz is an outstanding top-notch healthcare practitioner. As an African American professional student under his tutelage, I witnessed daily his always caring and unquestionably respectful demeanor in his interactions with all of his patients. Further, I can say first hand that Dr. Poncz is a wonderful mentor who has instructed and guided many students of diverse ethnic backgrounds including myself to both academic and career success. Thanks to him I have been able to have a very rewarding career as a professor and as a researcher. I am ever so grateful for his kindness to me and his always wise words that have shaped me and directed me to become a model citizen.
