Dr. Paul Thomas Rubery, MD

I brought my daughter into see Dr. Rubery, initially for a scoliosis visit upon referral from her pediatrician. While helpful in that regard, after a few years she started having neck pain. He did not take her symptoms seriously, and even after getting an MRI said that it wasn't that bad and the pain symptoms she was having were in her head. He said that sometimes children display stress in pain complaints. So I asked to get another opinion. Upon seeing that provider, I was sent to an adult orthopedic surgeon, who did another MRI, which showed major degenerative changes and escalation of her injury, and concluded that she had a serious injury and will likely need surgery in the near future! Amazing that my daughter's pain is not in her head!!! I'm saddened by the lack of empathy that Dr. Rubery had and the fact that he was so quick to make judgments about my daughter's mental capacity to think that pain was a mental issue. In my opinion, that is inexcusable as a physician.

It has been a good number of years since my visit, but I remember it vividly. I was in a great deal of pain, he acted as if I was wasting his time, then grabbed and quickly twisted my leg from the knee down to an almost right angle, while in a sitting position. I almost passed out from the pain. His demeanor never changed, there was no apology, and he still acted as if he just didn't care. My wife and I promptly ( I limped ) out of his office immediately and informed the front desk they would not see us again. Went to another doctor who correctly diagnosed the situation, performed surgery and corrected it. I don't know what D. Rubery's problem was, but he should attend a class in human behaviour.

The doctor is not available too all patients, as a college screens whom is being sent. In addition my family member was treated badly. Young ladies whom are slender do not develop fat at the disk locations. If this man saw MS he would not know it.

He as a great doctor and had me back in sports within a month of te surgery

I had surgery with this doctor costing over 10K with poor results. My stay at the hospital was a nightmare as nurses at the hospital made many mistakes on medications etc. The doctor did nothing to address this because he wants the favor of the hospital staff. Recovery has been a nightmare with pain that is greater than it was before surgery. Many calls and conversations with this doctors staff (who he defers to) have been ignored and dismissed as they take no notes and forget conversations. Instead of helping to address the pain issues they looked to dismiss me as a problematic patient. The same with major swelling... the doctor takes no responsibility that the surgery caused any problems and sent me back to my primary doctor though the swelling was right after surgery. If you read about these surgeries you will read a lot of history with patients who get dismissed by their surgeons in this way. Access to the doctor is also a huge problem. His assistant is a very poor communcator and… she does not understand the medical field or its topics and does not relay messages accurately. When this happens, the assistants and staff get very catty and disrespectful. This results in major problems for the patient. Expect follow up appointments to take a month and any changes to those to equally hard to schedule. Better yet, find another surgeon... even if it is a long drive to the hospital or out of state. When it comes down to it, this office is all about the money.. and not the care. I'm so very sad that I made the mistake of going to this surgeon who had his head in the sand and isn't focused on your care or what is truly going on with you.

My daughter has been going to Dr. Rubery since she was 20 months old. Most children fear the doctor, not her, she loves to see him and his office staff. Not only that but his bedside manner with her is great. Highly recommend

Hates it when patients and family ask questions. Seems to have a God complex.

I found this site to check up on Dr. Rubery's skills as a surgeon and so far I like what I see. I had an appt. with my regular spinal Dr. after an MRI and as I needed surgery asap, Dr. Rubery actually stayed late at the office to see me immediately...not many Dr.'s would do that for a new patient. As far as the office appt. went with him, he was polite, knowledgeable, and addressed all of my concerns. I will certainly write again with my experience after my surgery..but so far...my opinion of Dr. Rubery is an excellent one.

Though Dr. Rubery may need to touch up on his bedside manner, his ability as a doctor is phenomenal. He is an amazing surgeon who knows what he is doing and if I had to choose between skill/knowledge, or personality I would much prefer a skilled surgeon. I highly recommend Dr. Rubery for spinal issues.
