Dr. Peter K Nelson has the following 2 specialties
- Diagnostic Radiology
Radiologists help doctors get a closer look at what’s happening inside your body. If your primary care doctor wants to investigate your symptoms further, they may refer you to a radiologist to get an ultrasound or x-ray. Some radiologists specialize in mammography and breast imaging, which is who you see when you need a mammogram. A Radiologist can also determine if bones are broken or fractured after any kind of accident.
Radiologists are trained to perform MRIs and CT scans, both of which are used to determine the presence of diseases or disorders and help your doctor properly diagnose you. They can detect anything from tumors, bleeding and infections to bone and muscle disorders.
Neuroradiologists focus specifically on diagnosing conditions related to the nervous system, spine, head and neck through radiology. They can identify abnormalities in these areas and help doctors properly diagnose the presence of tumors, aneurysms and even dementia.
It’s also common for them to consult with patients with persistent headaches or back pains, trauma to a certain area, or any issue that can affect brain function, such as a stroke. Like any radiologist, they are trained to perform x-rays, cat scans, ultrasounds and MRIs, but they work closely with neurologists and neurosurgeons.

When I learned I had a brain aneurysm I made the rounds of a few top brain guys. But Dr. Peter K. Nelson was the one I chose; he, with a partner, invented and developed the devices for stenting wide-neck aneurysms, something that wasn't possible to do a few years before. The two-part aneurysm fixing procedures he did were not only safe and perfect - there was not one second of pain, ever. (With this kind of procedure, they make a small cut, the size of a little staple, at the top of your leg and weave the fiber optic camera thingy up to the top of your head. The cut doesn't hurt afterwards. ) He is exceptionally kind, a real intellectual, honest, and a man of such integrity that one instantly feels safe in his hands. He is deeply thoughtful ad also humorous. I later learned that he flies all over the country and the world (including China) teaching these new methods to hospitals. I had, and have, absolute confidence in this man's work. If you have an aneurysm, of course you'd be nervous, but see Dr. Nelson and his team. Your only problem will be the NYU hospital - technically they're top-class, but there is a brutal coldness among those in the recovery room, and among nurses and in the hospital atmosphere in general that is systemic and unpleasant and chilling. Still, you won't be there for long - up and out! But Dr. Nelson? Totally worth it.
