Dr. Ranganathan Ram, MD

Dr. Ram is one of the most compassionate doctors I have ever had the privilege to meet. I have been under his care for over a decade now, more than a third of the years during which I have seen a psychiatrist. His attention to the details of my life and medications are unmatched. When our appointments became virtual somewhat prior to the pandemic due to geographic moves, I continued to feel that Dr. Ram cared just as deeply about my case and care as he always had. He has made referrals for me to adjacent specialties several times when I was in great need of care, and I can never thank him enough for that. His kindness shows through in everything that he does, even in his voice. Dr. Ram’s encouragement and calmness have lifted my spirits more times than I can count.

Dr. Ram is an extremely caring and highly knowledgeable clinician. I have been a patient of Dr. Ram's for 10 years and I am so grateful and lucky that I was referred to him. I had trouble finding a connection with psychiatrists in the past and I struggled for many years to get the right help. Dr. Ram listened carefully to my history but he also quickly had suggestions that improved care immensely. It's clear he stays informed on state of the art in research and practice and his recommendations are always thoughtful. He and his wonderful staff make scheduling, appointments and after-care assistance simple and convenient. He is an excellent psychiatrist and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I have had the pleasure of having Dr Ram for several yrs now. I wouldn't want another doctor. He always shows care and does not interject or force anything. His suggestions to help was received well and is always advising if something doesn't work just let him know. I wouldn't recommend any other doctor other than Dr Ram.

Dr. Ram claimed that E.C.T. is a procedure that causes significant long-term impairment, but this is not a view endorsed by the medical community at large. E.C.T. has side effects on memory, but this is usually temporary, and the risks are very minimal. It is odd that he would not know this.

Dr. Ram had genetic testing performed for me using GeneSight and put me on four medications, claiming that this cocktail was tailored to my genetics. When I failed to respond, he told me that he had done everything he could medication-wise. This is patently false, as other physicians would later tell me. There are dozens of antidepressants out there and combinations with those antidepressants such as lithium. Dr. Ram never switched a medication and did not even try MAOIs or TCAs. He unnecessarily made me feel that the future was hopeless and insinuated that I would live my life in poverty (I come from an upper middle class family). Coincidentally, the drugs that Dr. Ram put me on are all drugs he is paid to promote.

I find Dr Ram to be straight forward, honest, and to the point. And of course expects you to be the same. No other way to get to the root of a problem unless all your cards are on the table. I find it very easy to open up to him, and felt a trust from the beginning. I have much respect for him, and his approach is a welcoming breath of fresh air. Just what I need in this stage of my psychological treatment.

So glad I’m not only one with same issues from him. I constantly was thrown pills kept me on one for way too long at too high of a dose. Then I pay out of pocket to see him because he doesn’t like my insurance I cancel for reasons I can’t control too late 3 days I get hit with no show then he cancels last minute I question my fee he just drops me. He’s an arrogant pompous man making a living off the ill and it’s sad.

I watch the show "The Doctors" everyday. Today they were talking about how patients are quick to complain and write bad reviews. If you have a great doctor give them some appreciation for all they do. So I just wanted to thank Dr.Rham for the wonderful doctor he has been for me. He has been my doctor for 6 years and he so understanding, non judgemental, caring and kind. All of his staff & my therapist Russell are top notch. His expertise is priceless and I feel so blessed to have him as my psychiatrist. I highly recommend him to anyone. If you read this Dr. Rham, thank you for all you have done for me!!

I would recommend that all future patients of Dr. Ram look at his earnings from pharmaceutical companies on Dollars for Docs, which is run by ProPublica. Dr. Ram received over $130,000 from pharmaceutical companies in speaking fees and other engagements in 2014 and $80,000 in 2013 and 2015. These numbers are higher than those of the average doctor, and I believe that they affected my treatment-- all the drugs that Dr. Ram prescribed are drugs that he has received payment to promote. Dr. Ram was initially very kind to me, but after about a year, abruptly became rude to me and discouraged me from seeing him, refusing to find me a new doctor. Even if he believed that he had "cured" me, he had put me on such unusually high dosages of medicines that I needed to see someone for medication management. This proved to be difficult because no-one wanted to prescribe the rather unusual drugs that he prescribed-- all for a rather simple case of depression! Future patients of Dr. Ram… should get second opinions on the drugs and dosages that he prescribes.
