Dr. Raoul Devin Nelson, MD

Dr. Raoul Nelson received his medical degree and doctorate of philosophy from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, completed his Pediatric residency at University of Utah and Primary Children’s Medical Center, and completed his Nephrology Fellowship at St. Louis Children’s Hospital at Washington University of St. Louis. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Nephrology & Hypertension division at University of Utah and is board-certified in Pediatric Nephrology. As chief of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology & Hypertension he manages division operations and as Medical Director of Pediatric Dialysis he manages the delivery of pediatric and adolescent dialysis at the University of Utah Hospital and Primary Children’s Medical Center.

His practice includes patients with diverse disorders of the kidney including chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, tubular disorders, cystic kidney disease, kidney malformations, kidney stones and …hypertension, and provides medical supervision of dialysis treatments, plasma exchange and kidney transplantation in children and adolescents. He has a special interest in nephrotic syndrome, renal tubular disorders, kidney stones, developmental defects of the kidney and cystic kidney disease. His regional practice includes patients not only from Utah, but also from surrounding states of Nevada, Colorado, Idaho and Montana.

His past research has includes studies of renal physiology, renal tubular disorders, developmental kidney defects and cystic kidney disease in animal models. He has also contributed to several genetic studies of renal tubular disorders. More recently he is recruiting pediatric and adolescent patients to participate in multicenter studies of pediatric and adolescent kidney disease and is engaged in implementation of the electronic health record to improve delivery of pediatric subspecialty care.
