Dr. Richard Carrol Brunken, MD

Richard Brunken, MD, is Director of Molecular Cardiac Imaging and a staff cardiologist in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Imaging Institute. He is board-certified in Internal medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Brunken specializes in nuclear cardiology and the assessment of myocardial viability using noninvasive imaging techniques. A recipient of DeBord and Regent Scholarships, Dr. Brunken did his undergraduate work in chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he graduated with High Distinction and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Following an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Hines VA Medical Center in Illinois, Dr. Brunken completed fellowships in Adult Cardiology and Nuclear Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center. He was Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiological Sciences at UCLA and Clinical …Associate Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology and Radiological Sciences in the UCLA Division of Nuclear Medicine. He was appointed to Cleveland Clinic in 1994, where he daily is involved in the education of radiology residents, nuclear medicine fellows and cardiology fellows. He was appointed Professor of Radiology in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in March, 2009. Dr. Brunken is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed medical journals including Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Noninvasive Cardiology, and the American Journal of Cardiac Imaging, among others. He is widely published in leading journals with more than 200 articles and abstracts on his specialty interests. , he is the author or co-author of a number of chapters related to cardiac imaging and nuclear medicine in medical textbooks on cardiology and cardiovascular imaging. As an invited lecturer to medical conferences and symposia, Dr. Brunken has presented his clinical experience and research nationally and internationally. Dr. Brunken is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and the American Heart Association, where he serves on the Council of Clinical Cardiology, the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences and the Council on Cardiovascular Radiology.
